Poinsettias – a beautiful bargain

November 20th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Have you seen the gorgeous poinsettias at Costco? They’re huge, gorgeous, and the perfect holiday decorating item. There are quite a few items at Costco that you can use to make the perfect winter holiday home, however, few have the impact that you can get for spending just $15.99 on a poinsettia (that’s $4.00 less than at Sam’s Club). The poinsettias are absolutely HUGE – we’re talking almost 40″ tall and 24″ across! The color is outstandingly brilliant too – vibrant green and deep, velvety red.

So, if you’re looking for that perfect little something to perk up your holiday home, run out and buy a couple of poinsettias from Costco.

I have the feeling we are not the only ones disappointed in the Costco Jumbo Poinsettias. Unfortunately, because of these giants loosing their leaves and flowers, after years and years of attempting to get one to survive through the Christmas Season, my husband has a “brown thumb” complex and will probably stop purchasing them once and for all.

We have never had a problem with the smaller poinsettias. In fact they almost always have blooms well in to Spring. My only guess is that the bigger plants must be in a different and disagreeable medium, or they are grown in smaller pots, then just before shipping are yanked out of their medium and stuck together to form the beautifully formed fanfare of color that they are.

Just as I do with the 6″ poinsettias, I keep them moist but make sure they never are overwaterd or stand in water.
