Cleaning Gets Green at Costco

Kirkland Signature Green Cleaning ProductsI found this great post on MomGoGreen.com announcing Costco’s new green cleaning line.  The new line up of environmentally friendly products will contain laundry detergent, multi-purpose cleaner, and liquid dish soap under the Kirkland Signature brand.  Costco developed the line using biodegradable cleaning agents and plant-based formulas.  According to an article in the Costco Connection, the products do not contain phosphates, dies, bleaches, are safe for septic systems, and were not tested on animals.  Plus, as we all know when Costco sets out to make something their goal is to produce somethng that is really great quality, as well as a great deal for customers.   Additionally, Costco has designed the products from scratch to have a smaller carbon footprint throughout the product lifecycle – from product creation and packaging to distribution.

Sadly, my Costco did not have the new green Kirkland Signature cleaning items on my most recent trip.  They were still selling the Wintree laundry detergent, which will be replaced by the new KS green laundry detergents.  And, they still have the rest of their usual cleaning line up too.  So, I haven’t had a chance to actually give the new products a try.  However, I was able to find a post on Green Martha reviewing the new KS liquid dish soap.

Although some people like the results they get with the Kirkland brands, there are a lot of anecdotal reports (just google it) that people are having rashes and/or allergic reactions to the laundry detergent. Apparently, Kirkland uses enzymes in the formulation of the detergent, and it’s likely that some people have a sensitivity to the enzymes. I haven’t seen a full ingredient list posted yet (Kirkland does not include the full list, but it’s possible that you could track it down from Huish who actually manufactures the product) but this is what several people who have done the research are saying. That’s not to say it won’t work well for some people – I believe Tide has enzymes as well and plenty of people use Tide without any problems. Just be cautious if you recognize a rash after a few weeks of using this stuff!

My skin is really prone to rashy breakouts with laundry detergents, except for a few brands. I always breakout immediately with Tide or when I sleep on sheets washed with Tide even. However, I’ve not had a problem at all with the Kirkland Signature environmentally friendly stuff. Previously, I had used All – the allergen free stuff – and also found that worked to keep me rash free.
