This Week at Costco – April 5, 2009

April 10th, 2009 · 5 Comments

Since this is a holiday weekend and Costco is Closed on Sunday, I figured I should do my weekly wrap up early.  Also, I will try to have my coupon book post up on Monday.  This next coupon book is good from April 13 – May 3.  By the way, there’s just one television coupon; a 26″ Proscan.  Anyway, on to all the stuff I bought this week.

Costco's Chicken Salad

Costco's Chicken Salad

Costco Rotisserie Chicken Salad -  This is why you should not go to Costco hungry.   They’ve been pushing this for a couple of weeks now but this week Dave and I were both starving and this tasted like the best thing ever.  So we bought it.  And honestly, it really is the best chicken salad I’ve ever had.  They make it with the rotisserie chicken and have nice big pieces of it, not little chicken shreds.  And it has some stuff like celery and onion too.  But really, the chicken is the total star here, as you would expect.   I’m sure that you could buy a chicken from Costco, take the skin off and all the meat and make your own chicken salad for less.  However, despite what I feel like is a lot of money for chicken salad, I think it is worth it.  Of course, that could just be my lazy side talking.  I’m not sure I could make something at home that would be better; it’s that good.  2.06 pounds for $10.28; $4.99 per pound.

Ritz Crackers

Ritz Crackers

Ritz Crackers -  And of course they had to demonstrate the chicken salad on something and it was Ritz Crackers.  I don’t normally buy these and haven’t had them in a long time.  They are a good little cracker to accompany your chicken salad, cheese, peanut butter, or whatever.  I’m sure it’s all the salt and fat in them but I try not to think about that when I’m eating them.  They do say that 5 crackers only has 80 calories and 6% of your sodium RDA though  Which is great if you can get full on just 5 crackers and whatever you are topping them with.  At Costco, you really have to commit to wanting these crackers in your pantry though, because you get four 12 ounce boxes in the one big box; each box has about 105 crackers, so that is 420 crackers in all.  I think I’m going to need more chicken salad.  4, 12 ounce boxes for $5.95.

Tim's Jalapeno Chips

Tim's Jalapeno Chips

Tim’s Jalapeno Flavored Potato Chips -  These are super good potato chips.  They are thick and incredibly crispy and crunchy.  Not to mention the spicy kick from the Jalapeno.  They went really well with the chicken salad.  They are a bit addictive though because you don’t want just a couple.  Of course, after a while the spicy can build up so it keeps you in check a bit.  Apparently, Tim’s also makes wasabi and pepper jack cheese flavored chips too; I would love to try either of those.  But I digress.  These chips would make a great partner with just about any sandwich.  However, they are pretty flavorful and can overpower things.  So, if you’re pairing it up with something that you really want to savor the taste of, you might want to think again.  They would go well with something like chicken or turkey that can be kind of bland and needs a little pick me up.  32 ounces for $5.29.

Don Miguel Chimichangas

Don Miguel Chimichangas

Don Miguel’s Southwest Chicken Chimichangas -  I think these are new at our Costco because I don’t recall having seen them before.  These are from the same people that bring you the little mini tacos and the flautas in the fridge cases.  These chimichangas are filled with all white meat chicken, spinach, cheese, black beans, and corn wrapped in a flour tortilla.  And they are yummy!  Usually when you get chimchangas they are fried, but with these you put then in the regular oven (they also say you can do them in a microwave but you know that’s not really going to be good) for around 15 minutes and you’re ready to eat.  We dressed ours up with some melted cheese and put a little tomatillo salsa on the top and they were really tasty.  These are packed like the flautas or the pasta you get at Costco; two plastic containers hooked together.  In each container you get 5 chimichangas, so 10 in all.  They aren’t huge but really two was a good serving for me, and three filled up Dave.  10, 4.25 ounce chimichangas in two packages for $9.69.

DVDs at Costco

DVDs at Costco

DVDs -  This week we bought two DVDs; one a new release and one a total classic.  The new release we bought was Quantum of Solace with Daniel Craig starring as James Bond.  It had some good action scenes and was entertaining.  I must admit Daniel Craig makes a much better James Bond than I originally thought he would.  I mean, it is hard to compete with Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan.  The other DVD we bought was a Monty Python classic, The Life of Brian.  The Life of Brian might not be for everyone but I just love it.  If you’re a Monty Python fan, this is one that you simply have to buy especially since it’s just $7.99.  They also have the Holy Grail (which we already own) that is so funny you’ll cry.  They have had quite a number of old movies for bargain prices, under $10, at our Costco recently.  It’s a great way to pick up classic films to add to your DVD collection; some of them weren’t even that old, like Walk the Line for $5.   Quantum of Solace for $17.79.  Monty Python’s Life of Brian for $7.99.

Still buying DVDs? Whaa? Isn’t that like buying 8-tracks in 1981? How can you stand the grainy quality? DVDs are so stone age!

    hehehehe

@Justin: DVDs with a quality, upscaling player don’t look bad at all on our front projector system. Yeah, sure, it’s obvious it is not 1080p Bluray, or even TV HD, but it doesn’t look bad either. What does look bad is standard TV resolution from a compressed channel over satellite or cable. Ugh. :-)

Oh, and I also meant to point out that we didn’t have any sides or anything when Kimberly talked about 2 ‘changas being a good portion for her and 3 of ‘em for me. If you wanted a traditional mexican restaurant plate, you’d have some side salad, rice, and beans. In which case, it would be WAY too much food for two people. I suspect you could easily feed a 2.5 kid average family with one of the sides of the package (5 chimichangas) once you balanced it out with the salad, etc.

FYI: Starting tomorrow (Monday 4/12) a few Midwest Costco locations will begin a new bread program. It is a pick two, and works the same way the bagles do. Members can choose any two types of selected breads and combine them in one bag and purchase them. These will be new types of bread not previously in the store. This program has been running at Bedford Park (Chicago) for the past few weeks.
