I still haven’t gotten a new coupon book here in the UK, or saw one in the stores either. I miss the almost continuous stream of coupons in the US, I guess. We’re thinking of trying out a new Costco this weekend, but I’m not sure I’m up for it because that will mean I’ll have to drive in a different area again. But we’ll see how brave I am on Sunday.
Alpen No Sugar Added Cereal – If you like museli or granola, this is a really great one. It’s made with 100% all natural ingredients with no sugar added, and it has lots of healthy grains, fruits and nuts. The cereal is made of wheat flakes, rolled oats, raisins, roasted hazelnuts and almonds. All of the sweetness comes from the big, plumb raisins and then you get a nice crunch from the nuts. It’s very filling because of all the wheat flakes and rolled oats, so a big bowl is not necessary to get really quite full. It’s pretty healthy too! A 100 gram (3.5 ounce) serving has 11.1 grams of protein, 7.8 grams of fiber, 65.1 grams of carbs but just 16.3 of those grams are from sugars, and 5.2 grams of fat. It’s really a very good way to replenish your energy after a bit of exercise in the morning. I’ll be honest, I could use just a little bit more sweetness in it though. I know that would make it less healthy, but what can I say, I like a bit of sugar in the morning. I tried adding a little bit of my Waitrose granola to it and that helps make it just sweet enough for me, plus I got a little bit of coconut that way too. The best part is the price, it’s about the same price for the big bag of it at Costco, as it is for the small box at the Waitrose that I shop at. 1.3 kg bag for £2.99 (US: 2.9 pounds for $4.56). Aberdeen Angus Burgers – Dave and I love a good burger, and if it is made of top quality beef that’s even better. And I know that buying the pre-formed burger patties is not as economical usually as buying ground meat and making my own burgers. However, I would have had to buy a lot more ground meat at Costco or paid a good deal more at a regular store. So, I’m okay with buying the patties especially when you consider that they are less than £1.00 per burger patty. And really, this is some great beef , so it is well worth the price. Each patty is 6 ounces of certified Aberdeen Angus beef and a little bit of seasoning (onion powder and white pepper). When you cook them they are juicy and delicious and don’t actually seem to shrink up all that much either. We both really love them. They have such a great flavor and aren’t all fatty and greasy. They are great to make our own fancy burgers at home with good cheese, sauteed mushrooms and onions, and spicy mustard on a toasted bun. You really can’t beat it! The only thing that would make it perfect would be to be able to buy French fries at Costco too. But those bags are absolutely enormous! 8, 6 ounce burgers for £6.99 (US: $10.66). Item #: 0091158.
Traditional Butter Brioche Loaf - I don’t think there’s any way that you could not like this big loaf of brioche. It is so buttery and perfect. It makes great sandwiches, great toast, great French toast and outstanding grilled cheese sandwiches. Honestly, there’s nothing that isn’t good with it. It’s so buttery too that you don’t even need to put butter on it, even if you’re just eating it dry. And it grills or toasts beautifully, turning the perfect golden brown and delicious. Oh yeah, and it is a completely decadent treat when paired with Nutella. This is a very big loaf too, so you’ll have plenty of chances to try it in a variety of different ways. I do think my favorite is for sandwiches though, either grilled or not. I made some really good sandwiches with chicken breasts, cheese, onions and spicy mustard and I toasted the bread to make it just that much better. Toasting the bread on both sides keeps the bread from getting too soggy when you’re using something like warm chicken breasts, like I was in this case. Of course, this bread is also good for things like French toast because it is very rich (with all that butter in it) and has a hint of sweetness too. 700 gram loaf for £2.65 (US: 1.5 pound loaf for $4.04). Item #: 0095272.
Ermes Fontana Mortadella – So, there’s just no way to position this as anything but an unhealthy choice for my lunchtime sandwiches. But it is really quite good. If you’re not familiar with mortadella, it is a cured Italian sausage that is a lot like bologna as far as appearance and texture go. However, mortadella is seasoned with various spices, berries, black pepper, and pistachios. On the package, they suggest serving it as a starter or with a bowl of nice olives but I like it on sandwiches. And to add to the unhealthiness, I like it with mayo. It’s got a very delicate flavor and really anything else you would put on a sandwich would probably be a bit too overpowering for it. It is also good just by itself too, of course. I was really pleased to see the mortadella at Costco, because it can be pricey at regular stores, if you can even find it. There’s not much in the package, which is probably a good thing though. 250 grams for £2.79 (US: 8.8 ounces for $4.26). Item #: 0099088.
VO5 MegaHold Styling Gel – When they say ‘extra strong’ hold on the package, they are not messing around or exaggerating. This stuff has some terrific holding power, no matter what the weather outside. My hair is currently at that annoying stage where it is not short enough to stay out of my eyes when I exercise, but it’s not quite long enough to be held back completely in a ponytail. So, I use a little gel on my hair in the morning when I’m going for a jog, and it manages to keep my hair out of my eyes and held back, even without barrettes. It also helps to keep the curl in my hair when I don’t feel like blow drying it or helps me blow dry it straight when I’m feeling more energetic about styling my hair. With all of the walking around we do here, it’s nice to have a styling product that can keep my hair from looking like I’ve been in a wind tunnel when I get someplace too. It even keeps my hair looking good when it’s raining. That could be due to something they call “aquascreen” that is supposed to keep the hold, even in super humid conditions. Dave also likes it too because he can use a little to keep his hair looking tidy all day long. Plus, it never gets that crunchy look or feel like a lot of hair styling products do when they have this much control. 3, 200 ml tubes for £5.99 (US: 7 ounces for $9.14). Item #: 0087814.
