[This guest post is another plea for opinions or experiences, this time regarding some leather furniture.  I recently had a reader, Tracy, contact me and ask if I could solicit everyone here for some opinions or thoughts on a couple of different leather furniture sets from Costco.   So, I'm hoping that someone here can help out and share their thoughts on either of the leather sets that are up for consideration!]

We have been looking at leather furniture and have to admit being attracted to the price of the black leather Spectra recliner set in the store (<$900 each). I wanted to ask if anyone has any feedback on these or should we just bite the bullet and get the Lexington offered online?

    I was at Costco’s 2 weeks ago and sit on the Spectra reclining sofa AND I fell In LOVE with It!!! IT’S SOOOO COMFORTABLE!!! Can someone PLEASE tell me IF I should pirchase It???

      CarolSue – I have the Spectra too and I love it. So comfortable when the recliner is up. Great material, easy to clean. The problem is that the wires that plug into the wall (that operate the reclining feature) dangle behind the sofa and get all tangled up on the floor. I have young boys who are always jumping from the sofa to the ottoman to the love seat (also Spectra) and back to the sofa. The sofa moves around on the hardwood floor and ends up crimping those dangling wires. My motor has blown out and one side of my sofa is in the recline position and I can’t get it back to normal. No electrician wants to deal with it, Costco won’t let me return (b/c it’s been over a year) and the manufacturer will not call me back to save my life. Frustrating. Otherwise, it’s an awesome sofa. Just know that if it malfunctions, your hands will be tied. Yes I know I should be able to control my sons from jumping on the sofas but…. oh well.

    I purchased the Matterhorn top leather powered recliner for $800 after shopping everywhere else for powered top grain leather @ $1,600 or more. Spend a $100 on craigslist and get a couple of guys to deliver it to your house. Love the couch and Costco. If you have a problem with Costco then take a look in the mirror and you will discover the real problem, end story.

        Chris, should that occur, Costco, unlike most others, will come to the rescue. Member for 30+ years and they have never let me down. Love Costco, that’s the truth.

          Mark, I’ve been a Costco member for 25+ yrs and when I went to them for that exact issue, they told me to contact the manufacturer. I’ve tried contacting them with no avail. My recliner is still in the reclined position, the motor busted so I can’t get it down and no electrician will touch it (I’ve tried). Frustrating. The design of the couch is poor with the wires hanging loose on the ground behind the couch. The wires got pinched under the couch, causing the motor to literally explode and die out. Now we’re just scared to plug it in PERIOD. Every electrician that has looked at it has said it’s a fire hazard.

            @Mark & Chris – Yes, I agree with Mark, I think this is definitely a time for a return to Costco. Did you order it online or buy it in the store?

    Okay Mary, I thought about renting a U haul but how would I carry it in the house by myself? Besides, this last love seat was damaged and they didn’t seem interested in getting me another one. Their policy is buying and selling a large quantity of products and after they’re gone it’s tough luck if you want the same product. I’m very pleased with the love seat I purchased at a wholesale house. Perhaps I paid a little more but you only get what you pay for.

    Just a hint about Costco having no delivery service: You can rent a pick-up or large van from U-Haul for $19.95! That is a great deal and cheaper than any delivery charge I have seen other than “free”.

    All in all I’m glad that I didn’t purchase this love seat because I can see it was junk. Remember…you only get what you pay for. I ended up buying one for double the price but it’s so comfortable you can fall asleep in mid-air before you even sit down. The warrantee is solid and if I have a problem, the tech will solve the problem. The grapefruits from Costco are still the best ever.

    Whew, I saw the Spectra Matterhorn today when we went to stock up on grape fruits. It was only $499 (reduced from $699) and I was shocked out of my shoes because it is head and shoulders more comfortable than my present love seat.

    I grabbed a salesperson and was ready to buy it when he told me they don’t deliver. Getting this bulky couch into my den would take a major miracle but I was visualizing the undertaking. That was until I saw a torn thread in the front lacing. He told me, that was the reason the couch was marked down. He said this was the last chair on the floor…take it or leave it. I left it.

    In the same aisle I saw a Simon Li seat. It’s called…””The Leonardo Love Seat.” It sells for $699.97, but since Costco has a no delivery policy I gave it a pass. At least we’ll enjoy the grapefruits.

    Have you tried using the Costco return policy? Furniture should be exempt from the 90 day rule “We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund. The following must be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund: televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, touch screen tablets, MP3 players and cellular phones.”

    What a nightmare….first couch was defective – one of the sections was two inches lower than the others….called the number on the enclosed card….recording gave another number to call… which then gave another number….very annoying….

    the woman I spoke to was very pleasant (Janet) and walked us through taking the back pieces off, checking everything to conclude that indeed there was a problem…she was willing to send a tech which made no sense since it was obviously a defective couch….

    I hired 2 friends to get the defective couch out and returned it to Coscto to get a second couch…(in the process put a deep 2″ paper cut in my palm, my husband punctured his hand moving the first defective couch out and got whacked in the head at Costco moving the second couch)

    Got the second couch home and unwrapped it and found three deep cuts in the leather on the top armrest which someone had fixed apparently tried to repair at the factory….Immediately called Janet and she said she would send a leather tech to take a look ……I paid 900.00 for a not defective good couch and that is what I wanted.

    After a night of no sleep and back and forth with the company – they could not do anything to help but perhaps reimburse me for the added costs to have friends move the 2 defective couches (like I am going to ask friends for receipts…).

    I called the manger of COSTCO WHO WAS WONDERFUL and they sent guys the next day to take the second defective couch and bring the new one…….SO, BUYER BEWARE……I am sitting in the couch now and it is very comfortable…but if you have a problem I would call COSTCO first…..

    Also, if in the East Coast, I would check out Bob’s Discount Furniture who has a similar sofa with delivery and warranty……May in the long run of greater or equal value given what I have gone through.

      So sorry for all you went through. Nothing seems easy anymore. We were just trying out the couch yesterday and was wondering what the return policies are. Now with furniture purchased from Costco.

    Hi,
    I am considering purchase of matterhorn leather power motion sofa this weekend.
    Can you guys please help with following :
    1) is it easy to wipe off any food etc without any stains or leaving sofa in very bad shape?
    2) Is it comfortable to use it after say 1-2 Yrs of usage
    3) Any issues and is Costco prompt is fixing them or with refund.

    Any help is highly appreciated.

    we purchased the leather power motion sofa and loveseat at costco. the loveseat had a small hole in the lower back of the frame . I called spectra to see what they could do to rectify the problem . Sean barto the rep who works there said he could send a bottle of the dye they use for the leather to help hide the hole . He also told me this area is made from vinyl not leather . So I found out that only the seating area is leather the entire rest of the sofa and loveseat is vinyl . If you read any of the information that comes with the furniture you will not see this mentioned . I was told spectra had stopped using bonded leather on the other areas about two years ago when they decided all the other manufacturers had switched to vinyl . So they need to change the tags on the furniture to show the change . the tags say the furniture is made of fine leathers , there is no mention anywhere of vinyl . We returned the furniture for a full refund at costco because of this . so beware of buying this furniture if you want a ll leather as advertised.

    I love those leather loveseats at Costco debating between the Simon Li (which is a tad more comfortable) vs the Spectra Hunter which reclines. Any opinions on which of these is better????

      We almost bought the Spectra Home power sofa. But when we checked our local store, they only had one in the box & the other was the one on display. So we looked into closeby Costco stores. During our online research, we found that manual recliners are better than power recliners since the latter will have problems like sofa getting stuck in reclined position etc. So we bought 2 Simon Li leather non reclining sofas. They were just delievered today. They are very comfortable. They are in mahogany color & have wooden legs.

      We chose non recliners since we wanted a durable sofa with no hazzles. Time will tell how long it will last.

        I purchased the same couch the leather is very durable bit the stuffing in the arms and the cushion i sit on all the time has failed its compressed and does not come back I am going to contact costco to see if they will do anything ( it was only two months old by the way)

    I just bought the Spectra power sofa and loveseat and, for the price, they seem like nice quality. Obviously I cannot vouch for the quality yet so I really hope I’m not disappointed. The sofa was $899 and the love seat was $799. The power on it works great.

    I have been trying to find the name of a leather sofa set carried in one of Costco’s sales brochures a couple of years ago. It was brown or burgundy in color, had at least three pieces and a very slight curve (conversation) to each piece. I thought I’d saved the name but am unable to find it now that my husband I are ready to purchase the set. It was quite a beautiful set and had excellent consumer reviews. If I recall correctly, the set sold for approximately $2,499.00. Thanks for any leads anyone can give me.

    My husband is 6’2″ and loves the furniture.

    We have had the pieces for a few weeks (superbowl weekend).

    We are going to buy another loveseat for a study as soon as costco gets more in stock.

    I searched the internet for info on this furniture and failed to find this blog, prior to purchase.

    I bought a love seat and couch.

    SUPER heavy!

    The couch did not function after unboxing and although the power wire looked plugged in, it must not have been. I contacted Spectra, although it was a weekend and left a message. My husband decided to return it. UGH.

    So, we were re-boxing the couch and he realized that the power cord must not have actually been plugged in to the motor unit. A test proved that the couch did in fact function.

    The backs of our units were not “snapped” into place, which would make carrying the unit down stairs easier. My husband easily disassembled for the re-boxing.

    I was relieved that we did not have to exchange the unit, due to weight of the thing and the fact that the only in stock Costco was 45 minutes away, in no traffic.

    A few days later, I received a call from Spectra and the man on the phone was SUPER nice and helpful. Before my conversation with him, I was wondering if these units would last. He said that most parts are easily replaced. Sorry – I never caught his name – 425 292 0398

    a bit to short for anyone over 6 ft tall but still very confortable. make sure you watch the power cables these might be pinched or chewed by ets.

    I just bought these couches about three weeks ago from Costco. Here is the number on the packaging for SPectra Home. 1-888-582-9030. I don’t think I would ever buy these again. We have kept them covered and they still have spots that look like the brown color came off. I think these are junk and I am very disappointed in the quality. Hope this number helps.

    I have the sofa with recliners on both ends purchased at Costco. All of a sudden the power stopped any ideas on what could be wrong?

      The one we looked at at Costco last night didn’t work when plugged in. I reached underneath where the power supply is attached to the frame, and wiggled the connectors on each end. Neither appeared to have been loose or not fully seated, but the wiggling was enough to make it functional.

      check all the cables. one of my cables were pinched by the mechanical frame of the recliner which caused a short.

      Did you get your issue resolved with your couch? We have the same couch as you did and ours just stopped working too. We’ve had it for less than a month…did you get yours working again? Has it stopped working again or did your return it?

    Does anyone have a user manual for this love seat. I bought the Spectra Matterhorn Leather Power love seat and I cannot get it into my basement. It is quite big. I was wondering if the base assembly comes off. Does someone have instructions on removing the base assembly to make it little smaller.

    Tina, Im considering purchaseing the Spectra power couch and love seat.
    Asside from the wireing issue, how do you feel about the sofa @ love seat?
    Would you choose it again? How long have you own it? Any coments you have are welcome.

      Besides the wiring, I do love the sofa and love seat. I’ve had the set for 1-1/2 years, purchased from Costco. They are comfortable, the recliner can stop at any angle, until you’re practically lying down. The color is a very deep, rich dark brown – very beautiful. Easy to clean too. I would say the annoying things about this set: 1) If you have kids that eat on the sofa, a LOT of crumbs will end up underneath the sofa. It’s not that big of a deal – I move the sofa every once in awhile and run the vacuum over the mess 2) The wires don’t neatly hide underneath the sofa. One my sofas has the back exposed and I’m constantly stuffing the wires underneath to hide them. 3) It’s just a TAD too small/short. I wish it was slightly longer and bigger but for a smaller room, it will be fine. Hope this helps!

        Hi Tina,
        Since you seem to have owned this set the longest and I am on a very limited budget due to medical bills I thought I’d ask you if you have had any of the “spotting” or color wear issues some others have said they have had?
        I found the set really comfortable in the store, but can’t invest a couple grand in something that won’t last.

          I have to say that I’m super happy with the sofa set. Even though I’ve had wiring issues and difficulty getting a response back from anyone, the sofa itself has been great.

    Hi, it’s Tina again, with the frayed wires in my couch. I have called many electricians in my local area and no one is willing to come out and look at this sofa! Shouldn’t it be easy enough just to replace the wire? At this point, I’m willing to pay out-of-pocket to get it fixed. I am not relying on any kind of compensation or replacement from Spectra. I still haven’t had any luck with getting a hold of anyone from Spectra. Can anyone post the number they’re using? I called my local Costco and they weren’t any help. I finally Googled my way through and got some number. When I called, it was the ex-CEO’s HOME NUMBER!!! He told me he didn’t work there anymore and he gave me the number and name to some VP guy. I’ve called and left messages and no one has called me back. So frustrating! I can’t even get a hold of a LIVE person!!!

        Thanks Tracey! I will try the number(s) tomorrow. Another poster on this website recommended that I log a complaint on the SaferProducts.gov website. I submitted my Report to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Not sure if this will do anything, but I guess it couldn’t hurt.
