This Week at Costco – June 19, 2011

June 25th, 2011 · 4 Comments

If you’re in the US, don’t forget that next weekend is 4th of July is coming up, so you might want to start purchasing all the stuff you need for throwing the perfect patriotic party.  Also, the current US and UK coupon books are good for another week, through July 3; that’s next Sunday.

Vergeer Cheddar Cheese Slices

Vergeer Mature Cheddar Cheese Slices – As part of my love of cheese, I try to constantly have some nice sliced cheddar, or some other equally meltable cheese, on hand pretty much all the time.  I like the ease of pre-sliced cheese for sandwiches and burgers, or just plain cheesy bread for a snack.  Since we were out the last time we went to Costco, we knew we had to pick up some cheese.  And as luck would have it, they were giving out samples of this lovely mature cheddar.  It has a strong cheddar flavor.  It really is perfect for burgers since you need something that can still add some flavor and not be totally overshadowed by the meat and condiments.  I also find this cheese to be really yummy with some crackers for lunch too.  And I’m sure you all know this, but I’ll just mention it, you should always let your cheese come to room temperature before serving or eating.  Cold cheese does not have anywhere near the depth of flavor and deliciousness that it will have when it warms up. Really, it tastes like a completely different thing with a little warmth.  Another way that we also like to use the sliced cheese is as a topping for a baked/jacket potato.  And sometimes when we’re really throwing nutrition to the wind, we melt it on top of fries.  The slices are just a convenience thing, for sure, but it is nice to have such perfectly even slices when you’re cooking.  1 kilogram for £4.15 (US: $6.64).  Item #: 0032962.

KS Yoga Tank

Kirkland Signature Women’s Yoga Tank – I had seen a little ad for the new Kirkland Signature yoga wear on the Costco.com website and was hoping that they would make their way to the UK as well.  So, I was really pleased to see these the last time we were there.  The tank is really comfortable with just enough stretch to make them comfortable for your workout, whether it be yoga, jogging, walking, or strength training.  The thing I think I like best though is that the tank is really long.  The extra length means that it won’t pull up and expose your back or belly, no matter how much you’re jumping around.  The tank is made from a moisture wicking fabric to keep you dry during your workout.  I also noticed that the seams, which are very flat, really do a good job of not rubbing against your skin when you’re doing something really active like jogging.  I really find the tank super comfortable.  My only complaint is that the racer back is very deep and unfortunately doesn’t cover my racer back bra’s straps.  That may or may not bother you and your bra might be narrow enough in the back to be covered by the tank.  But despite that, it’s very comfortable and I plan on buying a couple more.  As you can see from the picture, this one is a kind of turquoise blue color, but they also have black, purple, and pink to coordinate with the workout pants (below).£7.99 (US: $12.79).  Item #: 0551782.

KS Yoga Crop Pant

Kirkland Signature Women’s Yoga Crop Pants – To coordinate with the yoga tank, you have the yoga crop pants of course.  These are so much more comfortable to me than the Nike DriFit pants that I bought a while ago at Costco.  The KS version comes about 3 or 4 inches below my knee, which is a comfortable length that keeps your cool while working out.  The pants are not quite tight but not loose for sure.  Where they end on my leg they are loose but they are tight enough around the thigh area so as to not be uncomfortable when you’re moving around during your workout.  The material is decently thick too, which makes them feel more comfortable but also helps them to be much more flattering.  Much like the tank, the material is moisture wicking and breathable so you never get that yucky sweaty fabric feeling during your workout.  The waistband is wide and not that kind of super elastic stuff that makes you feel like you’re going to be cut in half when you try to do yoga.  The other very cool thing is that the pants are reversible.  On one side the waistband is highlighted with two thick stripes in coordinating colors, and the rest of the pants are black.  However, on the reverse side they entire pants are black with no color at all.  Costco has also been thoughtful enough to include a pocket in the waistband so that you can get to it no matter if the pants are reversed or not.  The pocket is quite discreet but pretty roomy since it easily fits my iPhone (though it does make a blocking shape on my hip of course) or iPod as well as some cash.  Unfortunately, I have a big clump of keys which don’t work in the pocket if I have my phone in there too, but if you have just a single key it would be perfect in the pocket.  £10.99 (US: $17.60).  Item #: 0551796.

KS by Borghese Mineral Lip Gloss

Kirkland Signature by Borghese Mineral Lip Shine and Lip Balm – This is the first time I’ve purchased anything from the Kirkland Signature by Borghese makeup line.  However, I’m really pleased with this, so I might try some of the other items.  So, despite the fancy name of ‘Lip Shine’ or ‘Lip Balm’ this all fits into the category that I would call ‘Lip Gloss.’  There are four tubes with an applicator brush in the lid, and then one tube that is squeezey and has that built-in angled applicator.  Both style of applicator work well, but I really do like the brush a little better for precision application.  You get four different colors, though, most of them are based around pink (3 of the 4) and then one is a brown based color.  The Lip Shine (the tubes with brushes) are wax and fragrance free and contain vitamins A and E to keep your lips moisturised and healthy.  The colors are all really nice, at least with my coloring, and add a little bit of shine and sparkle to your lips.  But the thing that I like is that they really do keep your lips moist and healthy, far more than most gloss or lipstick that I’ve used.  The colors are fairly sheer, so you could wear them with a deeper lipstick if you wanted a bigger punch of lip color.  The Lip Balm (squeezey tube) does not contain wax or fragrance either, and also has the benefit of protecting your lips from the sun with an SPF 15.  The balm is very sheer but does have a hint of pink to it.  It would be perfect to wear over your normal lipstick but I like it by itself for a nice natural look.  I find it enhances your natural lip color and gives a little shine as well.  Amazingly, they all seem to last for quite a while too.  I don’t know if the mineral stuff makes them last longer or what, but whatever it is works well.  It’s nice to not have to keep reapplying.  I guess I’ll have to check out the rest of the KS by Borghese makeup products.  4 tubes for £9.99 (US: $16.00).  Item #: 0491171.

The yoga collection is similar in style to Lululemon’s cool racerback tank and groove crop. Same feel to the material and also same constrast stitching on the reversible tank. They do however fit very big. Capris are too big for me and tank is baggier than I would like. Wishful thinking!

I should be so lucky that the Extra Small would be too big for me! :-)
I thought that the sizes for the yoga pants seem to be similar to my Lands’ End workout capris: Extra Large = 18/20, Large = 16/14, Medium = 12/10, Small = 8, and Extra Small = 6. However, based on everyone’s comments, maybe they’re bigger than that, especially at the smaller end of the size range. Based on the way my Large fits me I’m going to guess it is either a 16/14 or a 14/12 size.

Not sure if the sizes are different by region, but I live in California & the yoga pants run BIG! I’m quite “hippy” and I slid on a size XS with no effort. Anyone who is a size 6 or below won’t be able to fit the pants. They’ll be too big.
