I know that this is probably the most anticipated post I do each month, so hopefully at least a few people will be happy to read the good news that a Costco is coming to their area. If I haven’t written about a location you’re curious about, or don’t have it on the Locations page list of New Locations, send me an email and I’ll see if I can find anything.
Drummondville, Quebec, Canada
It’s official, building has started on the new Costco set to open in Drummondville on November 27, 2012. The new warehouse, which will include a gas station, will be on Highway 20 (Transcanada Highway). Right now it doesn’t look like much, but that will certainly change in the next couple of months so that they can be ready for their November opening date. And, thanks for the picture, Jacques!
As the gas station turns…the saga of the Costco gas station continues. Costco will be opening a new warehouse at the Westfield Wheaton Mall and there has been much contentious discussion about whether there can be a gas station attached or not. The problem arises from the nearby neighborhood, precisely the community pool and tennis courts apparently. So this issue has been going back and forth with lots of people complaining about the nearness of the gas station to the neighborhood. Well, the Montgomery County Council unanimously voted Tuesday to tighten gas station zoning restrictions and has put an end to Costco’s gas station plans. The new zoning regulations bans large gas stations from locating within 300 feet of public or private spaces like schools and playgrounds. At this point, Costco is still planning on opening the store in October as planned. However, they are looking at things to see if they can add the gas station in another location on the site, someplace farther from the swimming pool and tennis courts. The plan was for the gas station to be built on a vacant piece of land southwest of the store, which the county was hoping would play a part in revitalizing the area. We shall see how this finally plays out, but it looks like, for now at least, there will be no gas station at the new Costco in Wheaton.

The first Costco in D.C. is scheduled to open in November (I don’t know the exact date yet, sorry), and to kick things off they held a job fair at the Mount Horeb Baptist Church in Northeast Washington for local residents. An amazing 2,000+ people showed up to apply for the 200 open positions! Costco is looking to fill 200 positions such as managers, meat-cutters, stock workers, and other positions. Robert King, from the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, organized the job fair with Costco to combat the neighborhood’s high unemployment. While the employment rate for the District is 9%, in the area where the church is, Ward 5, there is much higher unemployment. King said he hopes to hold job fairs for the other retailers coming to the area. And Joe Elutrio, warehouse manager for Costco, said his company might hold another job fair in September. People were asked to pre-register to get an interview during the job fair. But 2,000 people signed up so quickly that the job fair organizers had to close pre-registration. However, there were still lots of people that showed up as walk-ins, some were granted interviews and some were asked to just drop off their resumes. It seems like Costco will be a very welcome employer for the area.
If you live around Lexington and have been hoping for a Costco, then you are in luck. Costco has filed an application with the Planning Commission to build a new warehouse in the Hamburg area. The new store is planned for the corner of Man o’ War and Polo Club boulevards, across I-75 from the primary Hamburg shopping area. The planning stages could take a while to get approval since Costco will need to ask the city for permission to modify the zoning regulations governing the site, because the law prohibits stores the size of Costco currently. So it could be a bit of a wait, but hopefully the new Costco will open within the next year or so.
It looks like Costco will be opening a new location in Adelaide sometime in late 2013 or early 2014. According to Patrick Noone, Costco’s Australian managing director, Costco has identified two locations in Adelaide, one in the north and one in the south, and they are in discussions now for those properties. Although he wouldn’t give details on where exactly the locations were, he did say that either spot would be centrally located since Adelaide isn’t a huge city. He also indicated that eventually Costco expects to open two or even three different warehouses around Adelaide.

It looks like Melbourne will be getting a second Costco location in mid 2013 (July or August 2013). Costco made the official announcement recently that their next Australia location will be in Ringwood, near Melbourne. Construction will begin in August for the 14,500 square-metre warehouse at the old Ringwood market site, on the corner of Bond and Market streets. The new warehouse will employ 400 and include a two level car park for 1,000 cars. With this new Melbourne location and the new store in Adelaide, that will give Costco five locations in Australia by early 2014. This will be Costco’s second location in Melbourne since the original Costco Australia store opened in 2009 at Docklands. Currently, the only other Costco Australia warehouses that are open for business are in Sydney and Canberra.
If you are interested in receiving further details, including when you can sign up for membership for the new store, you can registrer at the Costco Australia website.

Not a lot of holidays and closures this month. If I didn’t list holiday closures for the Costco in your country and you think there are some, it is probably because they are not listed on the respective Costco websites. Or, in the case of Mexico, my Spanish isn’t good enough to figure out if I’m missing something or not and Google translate doesn’t work for the whole site (some of it is images instead of text unfortunately).
