Happy Fifth Anniversary, AddictedToCostco!

November 8th, 2012 · 16 Comments

That’s right, as of Wednesday, November 7, I’ve been writing this blog for five whole years now!  It’s amazing to me that Costco carries just a few thousand items, yet that is enough for me to continuously buy new items and write about them here.  When I originally started my blog I was living in Austin, TX.  I wrote the blog for just over two years from Austin and then we moved to London.  At this point, I’ve now been an ex-pat writing about shopping at Costco, and basically, all things Costco really, for almost three years; so actually longer than while in the US now.   I didn’t even sort of fathom that so many people, from all around the world, would read my blog when I first started AddictedToCostco.  I thought it was a bit of a lark and a way for a few of my friends and family to keep up on the things I was continually getting at Costco so that they didn’t all need to keep asking me.  But a funny thing happened, a few people I didn’t know started reading it too, and then more and more.  Honestly, I didn’t really think so many people shared my obsession with shopping at Costco.  But now, after writing it for five years, I am thrilled by all of the readers that share their thoughts and love of Costco via my blog.

Part of “The Costco Craze” with CNBC.

So, now a few statistics about my blog:

  • I have published 717 posts in the last five years, that includes Guest Posts.  That’s an average of 143.4 per year and 2.76 posts on average per week.  I try really hard to get 3 posts published per week, but sometimes I’m sick or out of town so I don’t always get that done.  Of course, sometimes there is so much Costco news I need more than three posts per week too.
  • In the last five years I have made 206 “This Week at Costco” posts.  In those posts I have reviewed more than 1,000 different products that I have bought at Costco.  That’s quite a few reviews!  I try not to repeat reviews but sometimes they’ve changed stuff or I like it so much I feel like it needs to be repeated (hopefully, you’ll all forgive me for the repeats).
  • I have written about and published 14 different Costco UK Coupon Books and 12 different Costco US Coupon Books in the last year.  Which means that in the last year I have given out twelve $25.00 Costco Cash Cards for copies of the Costco US coupon books for a total of $300.00 in gift cards. I have also given out fourteen ‘rewards’ (they don’t sell Costco Cash Cards in the UK) of £25.00 for copies of the Costco UK coupon books for a total of £350.00.
  • Across all five years, I’ve published 42 Guest Posts and I am grateful to all of my guest posters throughout the years and really appreciate that they took the time to contribute to my blog.  In the last year, I have published 11 Guest Posts from readers that had something to share or wanted help making a purchase decision.  All of them were great and generated a good amount of discussion and hopefully the people looking for help or opinions got the information they were looking for.  I love having guest posts because it gives me, as well as all of you, a different perspective on Costco or their products or services.
  • In the last five years, there have been a total of 8,503 comments by lots of different readers and myself, with 2,045 of those comments in the last year.  That’s an average of 11.86 comments per post, which is respectable I think.  Of course, I know that isn’t how it works, because there are some posts that generate way more than their fair share of comments.  For instance, the Costco Locations page alone has generated 1,559 comments.
  • This year I made my first Costco related television appearance.  I was fortunate enough to be a small part of the CNBC documentary “The Costco Craze” as a result of writing this blog.  It was very cool and lots of fun.  I was a little worried that I was going to come off as the crazy lady who has a weird obsession with Costco, but they made it seem almost normal. LOL

And now, thanks to Google Analytics, here’s a bit about you, my visitors and fellow Costco fans:

  • In the last year I have had 1,429,035 visits which is an increase of 28.33% over the previous year!
  • Those visits were made by 1,112,005 unique visitors in the last year, which is up by 28.33% from the previous year.  And, all those different visitors represent 194 different countries or territories.
  • And those visitors looked at 2,382,176pages, up 25.09% from the previous year.
  • On average people viewed 1.67 pages per visit, which is actually down ever so slightly by 2.68%.
  • The most viewed pages on my blog in the last year were:
  • 192,907 visitors came directly to AddictedToCostco.com, the rest came from referral links or searches.  The number of direct visits is up by 28.90% in the last year though.
  • Searches sent 1,158,160 total visits from 30 different sources using 442,249 keywords.  The most popular search terms that people used to get to my site, included:
    • “Addicted To Costco” for 47,538 visits
    • “Costco Coupon Book” for 26,131 visits
    • “Costco Coupons” for 17,438 visits
    • “Costco Cakes” for 15,614 visits
    • “Costco Bakery” for 5,508 visits
  • Referring sites sent 77,177 visits via 2,690 different sites.  The most popular referring sites:
    • Google.com for 23,116 visits
    • Forums.Moneysavingexpert.com for 5,449 visits
    • Facebook.com for 5,215 visits
    • Swagbucks.com for 2,215 visits
    • HotUKDeals.com for 1,891 visits
    • CostcoCusisine.Blogspot.com for 1,590 visits (thanks, Mike!)
  • To date, there are 1,625 users that have subscribed to receive my blog feed.
  • Currently, I have 1,035 people that ‘like’ my AddictedToCostco.com page on Facebook.  But sadly, I only have 4 followers on my AddictedToCostco.com Google+ page.
In the last year there have been some big changes at Costco too:
  • Certainly the biggest change was the new CEO that took over at the beginning of 2012.  Jim Sinegal stepped down and Craig Jelinek officially took over as CEO.  So far, so good.
  • There was a small membership increase of 10% in the US and Canada.
  • Costco released its first app for your favourite smartphone.  It’s very useful if you’re in the US.  I hope they’ll release specific apps for the other countries soon.
  • Costco updated their websites around the world.  For some it was just sprucing up the informational websites that they provide.  However, for the US and Canada this included major overhauls for their online shopping sites.
  • And even bigger news is that they finally rolled out online shopping through their Costco UK website!!

As always, I want to say a huge “thank you” to everyone that reads my blog and contributes their thoughts and opinions.  I appreciate all of the sharing, weather through comments, guest posts, or sending me copies of the coupon books.  Without all of you I would just be that really crazy lady who shops far too much at Costco.  Naturally,  I also feel compelled to say thank you to Costco for stocking all the fabulous products that I keep being impressed with year after year.  None of us would love them quite so much if they didn’t have exceptional value with the best customer service and shopping experience ever.  I think it is fair to say that we have all grown to appreciate and count on Costco over the years.  Thanks, Costco, you rock!

Thanks everyone for the very nice comments! I’m so glad that everyone feels like my blog is enjoyable and informative, and hopefully a little funny at times too. I like sharing my Costco love with everyone and it makes me feel a little less kooky to know that there are so many other people that love Costco as much as I do.

Hi, Kimberly! I love your blog. Thought you might get a kick out of how Costco is solving the Thanksgiving challenge for me with their “personal turkeys!” It’s called, “Recipe for a Stress-free Thanksgiving” on my blog at http://www.ALittleBitOff.net.

@Cathy – I love the low stress Thanksgiving tips, especially the “personal turkeys”. The chickens are so yummy, you won’t miss the turkey anyway.

I caught the CNBC show last night. You did a great job.
Funny that I got an email from my sister and niece this morning asking a Costco question. I am the Costco guru in my family.

@Brenda – Well, now you’ll know where to go if you get a Costco question that even you aren’t sure of the answer. :-)
