As promised, even if late by a week, the latest update about new Costco locations is here. There’s a lot new this month and I hope I haven’t forgotten anything. After taking a little holiday to Singapore, which we really enjoyed, I think Costco should consider opening a new location there. It seems like a Costco type of place with all of its shopping. Not to mention, the Asian Costco locations do so well, they should be able to continue that in a new area like Singapore. Plus, if there’s a Costco there, then I could consider moving there.
Finally, the new Wheaton Costco will be opening next week on Wednesday, April 10. It might not have gas pumps, but at least the new location will be open for shopping. The new location is part of the Westfield Wheaton Mall.
Issaquah, Washington Headquarters
Costco is planning on creating a little more elbow room at its Issaquah headquarters. Currently, Costco occupies three buildings but is running out of space. The plan is to expand quite a bit, enough space for 2,000 additional employees apparently. The city of Issaquah is working with Costco to get the necessary permits in place by the end of 2013.
New Orleans, Louisiana
As you probably know if you live in New Orleans, Costco will be opening a new location there in August of this year. As part of that, Costco will be holding informational sessions and job fairs regarding employment opportunities at the new location. They held a session at Xavier University at the end of March. The new Costco store will employ around 75 full-time and 75 part-time workers and Costco hopes to hire from New Orleans residents. City Hall’s workforce development program, JOB1 Business and Career Solutions, will be available for the first two weeks of April to help process online job applications.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
It looks like Costco will be coming to Sioux Falls late this year! Costco will be closing on land near 41st Street and Grange Avenue in May according to The Dunham Company, the site developer. Since construction of a new Costco store generally takes around four month, I’m hopeful that the new location will be ready by late Fall.
Syracuse, New York
I know that a Costco location in upstate New York state has been something that many people have been wanting for a long time. And it finally looks like it is going to happen in Syracuse. The new Costco location will be built in Camillus, a suburb of Syracuse, as part of the new Township 5 project. In addition to Costco, the Township 5 project will have several national chain restaurants, a bowling alley, and an apartment complex featuring nearly 100 units. The new warehouse should be open by the end of November 2013. So, just a few more months to wait.

Albany, New York
It seems almost too good to be true, but it looks like New York state might be getting a second new Costco location near Albany, as well as Syracuse. Apparently, Costco has been looking at two different sites near Colonie, an Albany suburb. Clearly, this is still in the very early stages of development. One good candidate is the Latham Circle mall redevelopment project that needs an anchor tenant, one around Costco size. At this point, it looks like Costco is just looking for land but committed to anything or made any definite plans to build in the area. This means, that a new Costco location near Albany is probably two years out, at least. But at least this is positive news.

It looks like everything is going well and on track for the October opening of Lexington’s first Costco location near Hamburg. The new warehouse will be at Man o’ War and Polo Club boulevards, across I-75 from Hamburg’s primary shopping area. Hopefully this good luck will hold and the construction process will go smoothly and Costco will be hosting Lexington shoppers in October.
North Riverside, Illinois
Also, planned for an October opening is a new Costco location in North Riverside near Harlem Avenue and 26th Street. Costco closed on the 16 acre property in early March and has already begun demolishing an existing building on the site. The site is the former home of the Edward Don Company. Unfortunately, the old building had asbestos so that has to be properly removed before all of the demolition can be carried out. And of course, that demolition needs to happen before the new Costco location can go up. The city put some money into the deal to mitigate losses for the real estate company that held the ownership of the property that Costco purchased, they also took on some debt to make the deal happen. The city will also be adding a second, dedicated eastbound turn lane on 26th Street into the Costco property, which will hopefully relieve a bit of potential traffic tension.

Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
It looks like Costco might be opening a second location in the west Waterloo region. A marketing brochure for a retail development shows a Costco store as an anchor tenant facing Erb Street West. The location is near Ira Needles Boulevard and not far from the Waterloo Region Landfill. The property would need to have a zoning change to allow to the property to be used for retail purposes. This just seems like a bunch of speculation at this point though, since the Waterloo city officials say they haven’t received any applications for a zoning change. We’ll have to see how this develops.
The Sydney area will be getting its a number of new Costco locations in the next year. There’s one that is planned in Casula, southwest of Sydney. The new 14,000 square metre store in Casula has already received planning approval. The new Beech Road location is estimated to cost around A$40 million. There’s a second new Costco location planned for Sydney’s northwest in Marsden Park, as well. The Marsden Park location, which has yet to receive planning approval, is proposed for Richmond Road, on the corner of Hollingsworth Road. Since the new location is proposed for an area that is part of the industrial precinct, there will need to be some zoning changes before the new location could be built. Hopefully, the approvals will come about more quickly than those in Liverpool that took two years to get. However, the Liverpool location is finally going ahead as well and will be open by November 2013. So, if you’re keeping track this could mean that by the end of 2014 there could be 4 Costco locations around Sydney. And of course, these new locations are in addition to the new location being built at Ringwood in Melbourne, as well as the new location in North Lakes near Brisbane. Lots of Costco expansion going on in Australia in the next couple of years.
