Not a whole lot of news about new Costco locations this month, but there are a few. Though, they are in the very early stages of planning for the most part. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that they all actually get built. Also, if you’re in the US or Canada don’t forget that all Costco locations will be CLOSED on Monday for Labor Day.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
The new Costco in Sioux Falls will be opening on October 3, 2013. Now that the opening date is growing near they have set up a temporary locations to sell new memberships. The temporary membership will be open from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays and can be found at 1111 W. 41st Street. Lawrence, New Jersey
At the end of July Costco submitted plans to the Community Development Department for a new warehouse in Lawrence. The new store will be located at 4100 Quakerbridge Road on a 19 acre site. Currently the site is littered with unused buildings that previously made up the Princeton Research Center. The submitted plans are for a 156,000 square foot warehouse and an eight pump gas station and 721 parking spots. Aside from that, the Costco location would have the same features as other locations: a bakery, a liquor store, a photo center, an optical kiosk and two optical exam rooms, a pharmacy, a hearing aid center and a tire sales and installation center. . The new building would be LEED-certified, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which incorporate “green” building practices into the construction of new buildings. The town’s planning board voted to change the zoning for the site from residential to highway commercial last year. This change has made it possible for Costco to move into the property. The planning board screening committee reviewed the application on August 21, and has moved to send it before the full planning committee. A public hearing is tentatively scheduled for September 16 at 7:30 pm.

It is official, Costco will be opening a new location in Katy in the spring. The new warehouse will be located near the southwest corner of the I-10 and Grand Parkway intersection, near the the border between Fort Bend and Harris counties. Costco decided on the Katy area, in part, due to attractive tax incentives. The Houston City Council voted July 17 to grant Costco $1 million in tax rebates in exchange for infrastructure work undertaken by the corporation. The new location will be an anchor store in a new shopping center development. Costco is targeting an opening in Spring 2014.
Though still in the very, very early stages, it is possible that Woodbury might be getting a new Costco location. Apparently, Costco has been trying to move into the area for well over a decade but hasn’t been able to find the right opportunity. No formal plans have been submitted yet, but Costco developers have requested a meeting with the city planners about the possibilities related to a site that they are interested in purchasing, most likely because it will need a zoning change. Sadly, no one seems to have any clue as to where the actual property is that Costco is interested in currently. Don’t go getting your new membership just yet though, because it could take three to six months to even get a plan to the point where it is presented to the City Council for approval. So, it is going to be awhile before a new Woodbury Costco location actually opens its doors.
A new Costco location looks like it will be a part of the second phase of the Stonefield development in Albermarle. The Stonefield phase two development will be close to US 29 and will be made up of Costco and several smaller retailers. The project is still in its early stages. At this point, the board’s review is limited to the size and configuration of buildings, location of parking areas and landscaping. The board voted 3-1 to recommend moving forward with the initial site plan. Apparently, the look of the oustide of the building won’t be the regular, run-of-the-mill Costco store that you will find in most locations. Costco’s building will need to tie in with the architectural style of the surrounding buildings. Edens, the developer, will return to the architectural review board later this year for a final certificate of appropriateness for Stonefield’s second phase. No word on when building will start on the second phase though.
