November 2013 Locations Update

November 5th, 2013 · 3 Comments

Costco plans to open 36 new locations in their fiscal year 2014.  These plans would mean that they would be expanding faster than they did in fiscal year 2013 when they opened 26 new locations.  The new openings include: 18 openings in the United States, 7 in Asia, and 2 in Spain.  Since Spain is a new market for Costco it will be really interesting to see how that works out for them.

Openings this month:

  • North Plainfield, New Jersey: November 14, 2013
  • Cedar Park, Texas: November 13, 2013
  • Lubbock, Texas: November 16, 2013
  • North Riverside, Illinois: November 2013
  • Ringwood, Victoria, Australia: November 2013
  • Crossroads, NSW, Australia: November 2013
  • Mississauga, Ontario, Canada: November 2013

Centerville, Ohio

Costco will be opening a new location in Centerville at a development at Wilmington Pike and Feedwire roads near Interstate 675.  The new Costco store, the first location in the Dayton area, will be part of the city’s Cornerstone development on the property formerly owned by the Dille family.  Tax-increment financing will be used to fund the necessary improvements for the development.  Official site plans were submitted in early October for a 154,000 square foot warehouse with all of the standard Costco amenities.  Centerville City Council approved a preliminary development plan for phase one of the Cornerstone project after Costco and the developer agreed to move the location of the gas station.  I haven’t seen anything about proposed opening dates, but I would guess it will be targeted for Fall 2014.

Perrysburg, Ohio

Costco is hoping to open its second warehouse in the Toledo area in Perrysburg at the southeast corner of Eckel Junction Road and State Route 25.   Site plans for the new 154,300 square foot warehouse with gas station have been submitted to the planning and zoning commission and will be reviewed at their November 21 meeting.  After the site plan is reviewed by the commission, a final site plan will have to be submitted by Costco.  At that point, the city will examine the finer details, including the landscaping and materials used in construction.  The current plans show entrance off of State Route 25 and a further two entrances and an exit on Eckel Junction.  Apparently, this area is already traffic heavy, so the city will be moving up plans to adjust the roads to handle the extra traffic load from Costco.  The work will add five lanes to the intersection and lengthen other lanes that taper down away from the intersection. The estimated cost of the work is $2.2 million.

Mishawaka, Indiana

Costco has made it official and submitted plans for a new location in Mishawaka on University Drive.  The new 148,000 square foot warehouse will sit on a 19 acre plot and will have a gas station and a tire center.  Costco’s plans will be discussed at the November 12 meeting of the planning commission, then it will be further discussed at the December council meeting.

Miami, Florida

Costco will be moving from one shopping center to another in Miami; the current location is at 8300 Park Boulevard.  The new location will be in the Mall of Americas on West Flagler Street, which is apparently rather near their existing location.  The new warehouse will be built after they tear down the existing AMC 14 cinema and modify adjoining areas of the mall.  The new location will have a 18-pump gas station now too.  As a result of the gas station, the planning commission has decided that a new traffic light at Northwest 79th Avenue and the driveway north of the gas station that leads into the mall is required.  The current Costco location will operate normally until construction is completed, then the current staff will move to the new location. Store manager Francisco Morales said it will be up to corporate to determine any additional hires.

Florence, Kentucky

This still seems to fall into the total rumour stage, but it is possible that a new Costco location will be part of a new shopping development called Florence Towne Center.  The new shopping area is located just south of the Crossroads church in Florence, along Interstates 71/75.  The two anchor spots in the development are rumoured to be Costco and Menards (home improvement retailer).

Tulsa, Oklahoma

So far I think this is just rumour as well.  But it looks pretty definite that a new Costco location will finally be coming to Oklahoma.  There’s no discussion yet of where in Tulsa a new location might truly be located, it is just known that Costco is looking for property.  I know this would make everyone in Oklahoma happy and mean that you wouldn’t need to drive all the way to Dallas to get your Costco fix.  I’ll keep on the lookout for more definite news on the possible Tulsa location.

Seville, Spain

It seems that Costco’s plans to enter the market in Spain are in full force.  They have already broken ground on their new location in Seville, Spain!  The new location is proposed to open in March 2014.  While this will be the first Costco location to open in Spain, Costco also plans to open a second location in Spain this year as well.

Rumors all over town–including directly from the man who sold the land–that Costco has purchased land at Rodd Field Road and SPID in Corpus Christi, Texas. There are survey flags all over the property, too, so it would seem that *something* is moving forward. I was also told by a clerk at the location in Pharr, Texas that a location in Corpus Christi was coming soon. With all the Costco expansion in the Texas market and the huge surge of prosperity that oil and gas has brought to central-south Texas it seems a natural fit. Any dirt you could dig up on this would be very interesting to read!
