October 2014 Locations Update

October 7th, 2014 · 14 Comments

In my locations update this month, I’ve got some good news for a few lucky places, but some not so great news for others, unfortunately.  As usual, I’ve also gotten a number of requests in the last month to check out specific locations and I am trying to keep up with them all and find information.  Sorry if the place you wanted to know about isn’t in the update today, maybe next month.

Locations opening soon:

Official Opening Dates from Costco:
TIMNATH, COLORADO October 2, 2014
WAYNE, NEW JERSEY October 23, 2014
LEON (second store), MEXICO October 2014

Jackson, Mississippi

This has been a roller coaster ride so far.  Things looked really good and then they looked equally grim for the new Jackson Costco location.  But now it seems that there might be a little bit of hope again.  Costco was looking at a site by the Smith-Wills Stadium, which had a lot of people upset for various reasons and it seemed like Costco was unwilling to consider other locations.  However, the Jackson mayor, Tony Yarber, says that he has been in contact with Costco and they are indicating that they will look at other locations in Jackson, including the other two sites they had considered previously in Flowood along the Lakeland Drive/Mississippi 25 retail corridor.  So, we will just have to wait to see how this works out, but I’m guessing this will definitely mean that no Costco will be opening up around Jackson in the next year for sure.

Perrysburg, Ohio

It looks like the construction of the new Perrysburg location might be able to get back on track.  There is an underground gas pipeline that runs through the site of the new store and without rerouting it, construction couldn’t continue.  But Costco has reached an agreement with Columbia Pipeline Group to reroute the 1,300 feet of pipeline under their site starting later this month.  The gas line is 4-feet deep, has a 20-inch diameter, and runs diagonally across the 28-acre site, the rerouted pipeline will go around the north and east sides of the site instead. Luckily, the change in the pipeline is not   Unfortunately, this has caused serious delays to getting the new Costco built and Costco is now indicating that the new store will not be open until the end of 2015.

Jerome, Ohio

At the end of September, the Jerome Township Zoning Commission granted approval to the 148,000 square foot Costco that will be part of the new Dublin Green shopping center.  With approval granted, site work can begin on the project this fall and the actual construction phase will begin no later than June 2015.  Hopefully that means the new Costco will be open by the end of 2015.

Florence, Kentucky

Well, the new Costco coming to Florence has turned the corner into the actual construction phase now.  Construction has started on the 63 acre Florence Heights project at the northwest corner of Interstates 71/75 and US 42.  Costco’s new 135,000 square foot store should be open for business in early Fall 2015.   Menards will also be anchoring the new development and will open after Costco.

Pearland, Texas

Pearland officials have confirmed that Costco will indeed be part of the new development being built at the northwest corner of State Highway 288 and County Road 59.  The Pearland City Council held a meeting in the middle of September to consider a zoning change application to add things like a pharmacy and other design items to the existing plans for the development.  If approved, the council indicated that construction on the project would start in late 2015, which could mean that Costco will be open by Spring 2016.  I tried to check on the outcome of the city council meeting but was having  a problem getting their website to load.

Lévis, Quebec, Canada

Well, it was looking like the new Costco location in Lévis would be opening up in November, but now there is some undisclosed delay.  As a result of he delay, the new store will not be opening until March 2015.  The new 148,000 square foot store is part of a new development along Highway 20.  When the groundbreaking took place this past June, the store was supposed to be opening in November 2014, now though that has changed.  Strangely though, there seems to be lots of disagreement or lack of clarity for the cause of the delay.  Costco says that the problem is related to construction, but there’s disagreement on that as the cause from the developer and they say it must be an operational problem.  No matter what the cause of the problem, it means that the new Costco store won’t be open next month as hoped and planned.  Everyone will have to wait until Mach 2015 instead.

Canberra, ACT, Australia

The existing Canberra Costco store will be opening a new petrol station soon; before Christmas is the target.  This will be the fourth petrol station for Costco Australia, joining the ones in Sydney, Brisbane, and Liverpool.  Much like the rest of Costco shopping, you will only be able to enjoy the deep discounts on petrol if you are a Costco member.  This should come as a real relief to Canberra shoppers since they have some of the highest petrol prices in Australia as of result of the market being dominated by petrol stations from Woolworths and Coles.  At other Costco petrol locations, they have prices 2¢ – 4¢ cheaper than competing petrol stations.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

There was a big bunch of damage caused by Hurricane Odile and the subsequent looters to the Costco in Cabo San Lucas.  As a result the store was forced to close for repairs.  The winds from the hurricane were so strong that they tore through the gates and lifted a section of the roof off of the store.  And then of course, the looters broke in and added to the damage.  They not only took away merchandise but also cash registers, computers, weights, and printers and also destroyed the hearing and optical centers, according to Costco.  Costco is aiming to have the store back up and running by early November, though someone on here posted a comment saying it wasn’t going to be able to re-open until December 15.

Any news on ukiah or auburn ca

@Marie – The last I heard about the Ukiah location was that there was some lawsuit that seems highly fishy brought by four women, one that didn’t even know she was involved until she read about in the news. It has to do with the certification of the environmental impact report, traffic issues, and rezoning, as a result there’s really no progress on that store it seems. If you read the first link that I have, you’ll see that the women involved in the suit all are grocery store workers for what would be a competitor to Costco, and since one of them didn’t know she was a party to the suit, it seems likely that the owner of the two stores, Save Mart, cooked this little scheme up. Even more so when you find out that those bringing the suit had to pay $18,000 just to get a report with all of the public comments and meetings transcribed. Here are a couple of links on that: http://www.ukiahdailyjournal.com/news/ci_25527846/plaintiffs-costco-lawsuits-are-ukiah-grocery-workers

@Marie – With regards to the Auburn store, I think they are still trying to find the funds to move the senior center that will be displaced by the new Costco store. So, there seems to be a pause on that location’s progress as well.

just wishing and hoping and wondering if Costco will ever consider building a store in the Savannah, GA area??? There are so many people that support the idea of you coming here. Many have located here from places where they had a Costco nearby and everyone has said that “Costco is what I miss the most!” I hope you will consider this location on the East coast!!! Thank you for listening.

Columbus GA could use a Costco too. There is a huge military base there. I believe the closest Costco is 65 mils to Fort Benning.

Jerry, I completely agree! columbus, GA really needs a Costco (I started a facebook group for it)… I suppose the biggest thing we can do is keep bugging them via their website (and fb page)!!!

I did not think they would have 2 in that town. They are relocating the Willowbrook Mall store. Hopefully they will not lose their liquor license.

@Jerry – I hadn’t seen anything stating it was replacing the old store. At least not that I can remember but I know I’ve written about this location a number of times before. Thanks for the update.

@Jerry – I feel like an idiot because if I had only looked at the map I would have seen that the new one is basically across the street from the other Wayne location. Duh.

I believe the Wayne NJ location is a gas station. They have a Warehouse location in Wayne.

    • 13 Kimberly // 2014.10.07 at 8:22 am

@Jerry – Nope, you are referring to their other Wayne, NJ location at 77 Willowbrook Boulevard that has been around since the early 90s. The new location will be at 149 State Route 23 and opening October 23. And it looks like neither of them has a gas station at this point.

I was just at Willowbrook Mall in the last few weeks. They were finishing up construction on a gas station there for Costco. My wife will be pleased with 2 locations.
