Well, this latest update on locations has been much delayed, but there wasn’t much news around the holidays and then I was trying to sift through all of my email requests for information. Unfortunately, I can’t always find concrete information on new locations, despite the many rumors that are swirling around in various areas around the US. I wish I could always confirm the rumors because I know how much everyone wants a Costco in their town!
Raritan Township/Flemington, New Jersey
The groundwork is underway to get the new Costco up and running towards the end of this year. At this point the company that owns the land, Garden Commercial Properties, has been working on all of the grading and prep work for the building and utilities. Obviously this all takes a bit of time, especially since this isn’t really a great time to be digging in the ground in New Jersey. Currently, it is expected that the building of the actual Costco building should commence sometime in June. So, if everything goes to plan it seems like this new Costco location should be opening in November 2015.
Lower Macungie, Pennsylvania
This is retail development that has been through a lot just to get to the point where they can actually start construction. It’s taken five years of planning and negotiations already and will take about 18 months before they start opening stores. Of course, a lot of the strife has come over the tax financing plan and that battle is still ongoing in Lehigh County Court; this is a suit brought by neighboring shopping malls on the “fairness” of the tax financing plan. In any case, the developers are hoping to have the grand opening in July 2016. So, this new Costco location isn’t opening super soon, but they are actually making progress in the right direction finally. The whole development is pretty huge with 570,000 square feet of shopping space, as well as 2.5 miles of walking and biking paths. Aside from Costco, other retailers include Whole Foods, Nordstrom Rack, Pier One, PetSmart, Target, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. The new shopping area will bring hundreds of new jobs with it as well: 619 full-time jobs and 301 part-time jobs, as well as 500 construction jobs. I’m glad they’re finally able to move forward with the plans and I hope it all goes smoothly.
And speaking of legal strife… The City of Auburn is suing Placer County over the new Costco project that is planned for an unincorporated area of the county. The suit is claiming that the county is violating the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). As I understand it, the agreement with Costco is based on the ability of their plans to get through the CEQA process, and at this point nothing has been done and the plans have yet to be approved even. The county owns the land that the new Costco will be built on and the existing tenants will need to move to other premises. Plans to redevelop the land have been in the works for many, many years so this shouldn’t have come as a huge surprise to the existing tenants, some of which are non-profits. Costco has even offered $530,000 to help relocate one of the property’s current non-profit occupants, the Auburn Multipurpose Senior Center. This seems like there’s more going on here than any environmental concerns, I’d guess it is about sales tax or something like that. But we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out and how much this delays the plans for the new Costco location.

Wesley Chapel/Tampa, Florida
Costco has plans to open a new location as part of the Cypress Creek Town Center. The new 153,000 square foot warehouse will be part of an enormous new shopping development near Interstate 75 and State Road 56. The development will be on 540 acres and have 2 million square foot of retail, restaurant, and hotel space, as well as residential space. The biggest retailer, the Tampa Premium Outlets mall, which is to cover 1 million square foot, should be opening in October 2015. Since the plans for Costco are still in the very early stages there’s no word on when it will open but I’m guessing it won’t be until 2016.
Grand Chute/Appleton, Wisconsin
After two years of looking for the right site around Appleton, it seems that Costco has finally found the one that is just right in Grand Chute. Costco has filed permits to build a new location at 5441 W. Wisconsin Ave, between McCarthy Road and Mayflower Drive. The new store plans are to build a 150,000 square foot warehouse and gas station. However, before any building can take place, there are a few things that need to be done, aside from the ground being a bit less frozen and snow covered. Costco will need to get planning approval as well as a roadway development agreement to extend Integrity Way between McCarthy Road and Mayflower Drive. Costco has already applied to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to obtain a permit for wetland mitigation, erosion control and stormwater control. Costco is targeting June 1, 2015 to begin construction, with hopes to open in October 2015.

Costco has submitted its plans for a new location in Hanford at East Lacey Boulevard and Highway 43. The city responded with their changes and are awaiting Costco’s updated plans to review. At this point, it looks like Costco wouldn’t be able to have a permit to begin building before the beginning of March. And that late start to building could make it very hard for them to open this new location this summer.
