So, I’ve written quite often about how much I love Nutella for it’s chocolaty hazel-nutty goodness. However, I don’t love it so much that I would get in a fist fight over it. Unfortunately, not everyone has my powers of restraint it seems.
On Sunday, there was a shocking event that took place in the Burbank California Costco (1051 W Burbank Blvd) and it all started over the sample station of Nutella waffles. A 78 year old man was wanting a sample, sadly for him it was at the same time as a 24 year old man, Derrick Gharabighi, had snatched all of them up. The older shopper told the young guy he had wanted one of the samples and that he shouldn’t take so many. This is something that just seems like basic politeness really and not something that you should actually have to ever tell someone. Usually the reaction to a stranger saying something like this might shame, guilt, or to just ignore them. Mr. Gharabighi had another, much more violent reaction: he punched the 78 year old shopper in the face!!! What the hell?!? The older shopper/victim was admitted to the hospital with a one inch cut and swelling around his left eye.
Mr. Gharabighi is now finding out that snarfing down all of the samples and then acting like the Incredible Hulk is a very expensive proposition. He was arrested and has been charged with one count of elder abuse, as well as the special allegation that he inflicted great bodily harm on the elderly man. He is currently being held on $50,000.00 bail. If he’s convicted he faces as much as 11 years in prison, according to the LA district attorney’s office. You kind of wonder how he could not be convicted since he assaulted the man in a busy Costco store on a Sunday and right in front of at least one witness (the sample person), not to mention the security cameras in Costco that must have caught this on tape. Certainly the cost of Nutella and some waffles is much less than all of the legal fees and prison time. So, I hope he enjoyed the Nutella because it is probably the last time for quite a while he’ll be having that treat.
This is a horrific and really shocking situation. It’s almost impossible to believe because it just seems to be such an utterly over the top reaction to something that is really quite trivial. Who goes around punching people at the slightest provocation (if you can even call this provocation)? Can people just not control themselves anymore? Or, do they simply not feel a need to do so? And why are some people so greedy about grabbing up all of the free samples that Costco gives out? I mean, try one or two but you don’t need to make a pig of yourself and take them all, especially if others are waiting for a sample.
They haven’t named the victim but I’m hoping that Nutella sends him a get well gift basket.
