My Best Buy at Costco…Ever?

March 31st, 2008 · 233 Comments

We have been trying to find some nice bookcases to cover one whole wall in our media room for ages now. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find a nice looking, sturdy bookcase for a reasonable price. And our other priority was that they needed to be tall because the room has 11 foot ceilings so something not having some decent height would just get dwarfed by the room.

For over a year I looked everywhere. Pottery Barn/Restoration Hardware type places, which had ok things but really high prices and they weren’t all that tall or nicely detailed. I also tried this place that sends me their catalog and is targeted at people that read a lot and presumably have large libraries. Unfortunately, they had nice things with a highish price and a middling level of detail. I also tried a variety of furniture stores and they had the right amount of detail but some were kind of dodgy construction, while others were so expensive I’d have had to sell a kidney to get enough to fill our 12′ wall space. And, I did try looking at, but they didn’t have anything that really appealed to me and met all of my criteria.

Bayside Furnishings Mt. Rainier 84″ BookcaseThen one day when we were in Costco for our weekly stocking up when we saw the perfect bookcases for our room. They had one assembled so you could get a feel for the height and width of it, plus see all of the great detail. We couldn’t believe our luck. And then we saw the price. Now, I want you to look at the picture and then get a price in your head of how much you would pay for that bookcase. Can’t quite come up with a figure? Well, let me give you a little more detail that might not be evident from the picture.

  • Double bookcase with dimensions of 48″ wide X 15.5″ deep X 84″ high.
  • Constructed of hardwoods and cherry veneers with an 11 step hand-applied finish.
  • Elegant crown and base moldings.
  • Four adjustable glass shelves with halogen lighting, six adjustable wooden shelves, and two fixed wooden shelves.

Ok, so after all the details and the photo for guidance, you probably have an idea of how much these bookcases might cost. Well, you’re wrong…you’re way off…much too high. No, I can’t read your mind but I am willing to bet that your guess was not $199.99. That’s right these bookcases were only $199.99!!

We assumed there must be something wrong with our eyes or that they had messed up the price on the ticket. But no, that was the real price. So, we immediately decided to get three of them (thankfully there was a nice strong guy in the parking lot that helped us get them in our car or we might still be in the Costco parking lot).

Mt. Rainier 84″ Bookcase - base molding detail

I mean, the dimensions couldn’t have been more perfect for our room. We were looking for 12′ to 14′ (width) of bookcases and really needed something that would be at least 7′ tall but not more than 8′. Not to mention the details of the crown and base moldings fit with the style of our house perfectly.

Mt. Rainier 84″ Bookcase

This is without a doubt the best deal I have ever gotten on anything at Costco. These are sturdy, wood, real adult bookcases (i.e. not something you would buy for your college dorm or apartment). And they’re absolutely gorgeous! Everyone that comes in the room comments on how nice the bookcases look and how they wish they could find some as nice. We even had one friend ask us if we had them custom made because they fit the room so well. Of course, I tell them they can get them at Costco for just $199.99. I still can’t believe that we only paid $600 for that whole wall of bookcases. How incredible is that?

In any case, I haven’t been able to find anything of similar quality to compare prices but I know I looked at things that were not nearly as nice, big, or detailed for $800 – $1,200 in various catalogs and stores. Seriously, I looked for over a year for bookcases. I was beginning to think that I’d never find the right bookcases. And before I forget to mention it, you can still get these bookcases, at this spectacular price, at the north Costco in Austin. I also noticed that both of the Costco stores in Kansas that I went to had them.

And this is just one of the reasons why I love shopping at Costco. So, what’s your best Costco buy?

I have seven of these that I built myself. I built them 8 years ago when I was 64 years old. They are not hard to build but plan ahead how to get it to its final resting place because it is heavy. I’ve been searching for a few more but other comments on here make that sound unlikely. Why do companies always stop making their best items

The bookcases are being sold in an estate sale on December 2nd & 3rd, 2016. The estate sale is in Phoenix, AZ and is being conducted by

I just relocated to Orlando, FL and have the Rainier Bookcase in excellent condition for sale. It would probably be best to pick them up locally just because they are so heavy. I also have the Bayside Furnishings Bradshaw TV Console, which matches this bookcase quite well. They are also in excellent condition: ITEM 623173 Model #BRS60C.

      Hi Allan,
I read a post online from aug 13th that says you have two of the Mr Rainer Costco bookcases from 2008 that you are selling? Is this current information and if so, what condition are they in? we are very interested in trying to add to our current 4 we have.

      • 21 Allan // 2015.08.31 at 7:30 am

Yes, they are still available and I am planning on selling them. They are in excellent condition, no visible dents or scratches.

A local person was supposed to come look at them yesterday, but they now think the height is a problem for them. I have them on the local Craigslist.

As noted, I am on Long Island (New York), so not sure how convenient that is for you to pick up…

          Dee Dee,
These book cases are no longer in production, so you will not be able to find them in any Costco. They stopped making them in 2008/2009, I believe. The bookcases were made by Bayside Furnishings, and the name of the bookcase is Mount Rainier Open Double Bookcase. I called them, some time ago, and they only made them for Costco. The only way to get one is if you happen to find someone selling one. Good Luck!

I love these bookcases….as do many other I’ve just discovered. I too have been searching for something like this….without wanting $1200 price tag for it! But even the $1200 ones I found weren’t as nice as this! Why are bookshelfs so difficult to find at the moment! ??

  19. 37 Rebecca // 2014.03.18 at 1:15 am

Our safe. The fact that it was delivered to our garage and unpacked, and all the packaging taken away made it more than worth it.

  20. 38 Anda // 2014.03.15 at 8:55 am

I have five of these bookshelves (fully assembled, pristine condition) to sell. (Moving to a much smaller house.) I’m located in Montreal, Canada. Anyone willing to come pick them up is welcome to buy them!

Ugh! I would’ve purchased them from you but we recently relocated to Arizona. Thanks

      • 46 Catherine Murillo // 2014.08.28 at 12:21 pm

Yeah I am interested in the bookcases. Can you please let me know what condition they are in, how much you are looking for them and if you can send me pictures.

        • 47 Jolly // 2014.08.29 at 7:46 am

Catherine…Don’t know if you received my response yesterday, so I’m trying again. The bookcases are in excellent condition. They have been standing in the same spot in our office since the day we put them together. They are the focal point of the room. We used them for display purposes only…once we placed the books and collectibles on the shelves, they weren’t moved again. Lights work…all shelves and hardware in place…no scratches…etc. Shutters are usually kept closed in this room, so no impact from sunlight. Since they are basically new condition, I’d like to get what I have in them (minus taxes)…$400 for the pair. If you already have some of these bookcases, you know they look a lot more expensive than that. If you can provide me with an email, I’ll send photos…I don’t see a way to upload them on this site. Thanks…Jolly

Ok. Obviously these were very nice pieces. I bought one in 2008 when i used to live in an apartment. Now i am buying a home and want add two more of these, but cant seem to find anywhere on the web or stores. Anybody has any idea how we could more of these?

    • 56 Seth // 2014.02.20 at 8:57 am

At this point you might be able to find someone on this site that has one for sale (usually because they couldn’t get another to match the set, and are starting over) or occasionally you might find one on craigslist. No one has made them for several years.
