Costco – Saving You Time

October 16th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Sure, you know that Costco saves you money but they’re also all about saving you (and them) time.  Recently, there was a comment about the free roaming guy with the scanner going through the checkout lanes to help save you time in the checkout process.  Well, I found a great post, Ode to Costco’s Scanner Gun, about that very topic on the Money Changes Things blog.

So, the skinny is that if you only have a few things in your cart you can get the speedy scanner treatment, otherwise, you have to go through the regular checkout scenario.  Basically, the guy roaming around with the scanner in his hand will scan your membership card and the items in your cart and then by Costco magic he transmits it to the check out person and when you get up there all you have to do is pay, not even sort of mess with removing the things from your cart at all.  I always buy too much stuff to take advantage of this, however, I still think it is a fabulous idea!  I’ve noticed that the scanner guy will also take care of renewing your membership before you get to the checkout too (no matter how many things you have in your cart), which is another good idea.  I’ve heard from a few people recently that their Costco’s have installed self checkout lanes.  I’m sure that this is another way that Costco is working to help to alleviate some of the build up of people on the busy weekends and get those people that just have a few things out of the store before they get cranky standing in long lines to buy a bag of potato chips.

I think the bag of goodies depends on the store where you join. As far as the coupons go, I’ve heard that you are put on the mailing list when you join and that you will receive any coupons that haven’t been mailed yet. I’m sure that if you ask, they will provide you with coupons if you join during the period that they have a coupon book. Or, if you go to one of the Costco’s that uses the master coupon scheme, then you don’t even need the coupon book to get the savings.

Hi. I love costco too. You sound like a Costco Guru here. Do you know if they still give a goody bag for joining? and are the coupons issued on the spot when you join at the store? Thanks!
