Guest Post: Kitchen Cabinets from All Wood Cabinetry?

January 15th, 2010 · 337 Comments

[This is almost like a guest post, but really more of a guest plea for information or reviews.  Since I don’t have personal experience purchasing cabinetry through Costco’s deal with All Wood Cabinetry, I thought I would put the question to all of you.]

My husband and I have been Costco members for 15 years. We live in Southern California and we are about to remodel our kitchen.  We are seriously considering purchasing our cabinets from All Wood Cabinetry at Costco.com.  We are having a hard time finding any reviews about the product from people who have purchased it from Costco.  We would very much appreciate hearing from any readers on the subject.  Specifically, did the company deliver as it said it would, did the product arrive in good shape, does the quality of the cabinetry match the advertised description?  Any information about the purchase of these cabinets would be useful to us.
Thanks so much,
Maria

I would not recommend buying product from All Wood Cabinetry. The cabinets are not as advertised. They cabinet components are purchased out of China per Jessica in the office. They are only assembled in the U.S. The product is cheaply made and very poor quality. The deliver was just as bad as the product. I guess now I see how and why the company can keep prices so low

Amanda you clearly don’t know what you are talking about.

Working with All Wood Cabinetry has been horrible. I bought these cabinets through Costco and it has been a terrible mistake. If they weren’t up on the walls already I would return them all. Here are some of the issues I have had:

    1. They sent the wrong size cabinet so one of them didn’t fit.
    2. When I called and asked about it they said it was their error but that I would need to purchase a new one and then once I shipped the other back they would refund my money.
    3. The designer Jessica, who I had called about it was so rude during the whole process, and I asked if that was the kind of customer service I would expect and she said “I’m not the customer service department!”
    4. She transferred me to their answering machine, which I left a message. Never got a call back.
    5. Tried back two days later and they agreed to send me a new one and that they would get me a return shipping label.
    6. I sent it back and now two weeks later I still have no cabinet! They say it’s stuck in shipping!
    7. There are literally no installation instructions. They send all of the cabinets and trim and nothing else! No how-to, tips or anything on what to do with the trim.
    8. It’s not real wood! It’s all plywood with a thin layer of mdf white cover on it. It should be called All Plywood Cabinetry.

After more than a month after purchasing the cabinets I am still waiting for the last one to get here and still have no 36″ cabinet to hold all of my kitchen plates.

I’m super disappointed with them and will never buy from them again! I’m surprised Costco is even connected with this company.

Anytime ANY cabinet company says their cabinets are “all-wood”, they will always be laminated plywood. If the box was made from solid wood, A: it would be considerably more expensive, B: it would warp when any moisture touched it (there is A LOT of moisture in the kitchen). I am not sure how long you said it took you to get your cabinets in the first place, but when most cabinet companies take 4-6 weeks to get you the cabinets in the first place, I wouldn’t consider a 2 week replacement that long to wait.

I believe he said the cabinets are MDF with a veneer over that. So the cabinets are not even plywood. They sound like basic cheap construction.

        • 6 MDF Cabinets // 2013.08.01 at 6:08 pm

Just to let you know that although I prefer plywood boxes b/c they are lighter for about the same strength, our experience with MDF includes Merrillat Classic installed in a very steamy masterbath… these are cherry veneer and include two vanities plus a large “pot drawer” we use as a linen chest. Installed in 2009 and still perfect — nothing has warped, cracked or changed about them.

I see a few people here sticking up for PB (particle board) and MDF (medium density fiberboard) and I can tell you from 30 years’ experience as a kitchen remodeler and cabinet maker plywood is far better. I have seen particle board cabinets disintegrate after about 5 years or less. MDF boxes will hold up a bit longer. There is a place for these materials and it is usually used in the builder grade cabinets because of price. Most tract homes will have cabinets made from both PB and MDF and they need replaced in a few years. They look nice when they are new but just don’t hold up after a few years of use. MDF is okay if used in door centers and the reason for that is MDF will not expand and contract as much as wood. Cabinet strength also suffers from using PB or MDF, the fasteners or staples will not hold as well as in plywood. Kitchen cabinets that I have seen that use PB or MDF materials have always had problems in the long run. If you are looking for good cabinets at a good price email and I will tell you where to buy good cabinets on line.

Just to reassure folks, our PERSONAL experience is that both the MDF boxes in our 20 year old Kitchen and the more recent MDF boxes in our 2009 master bath have performed well. The ONLY issues with the kitchen cabinets have been that the thermo foil came off the doors AND some of the “soft close” (from a famous brand) failed when they “snapped” the little plastic insert after 20 years of daily use. But the boxes have been champs. Meanwhile, my brother-in-law MADE is own cabinets about 25 years ago using birch plywood boxes and solid cherry mitered doors and solid cherry slab drawers — truthfully, there has been no difference in performance of the boxes. (Even he was surprised.) My father — the son of a fine furniture carpenter, who himself made cabinets as a hobby, just as often used MDF as birch plywood for the boxes. His only warning to me was to avoid inset doors on cabinets (and furniture) because his experience was the frames & doors — overt time — will change shape at different rates. He far preferred standard or full overlay doors b/c minor changes (contraction/expansion) in the shape of the door and face frames was hidden and did not affect fit and finish.

Hello to all my fellow members. We completed installing the All Wood Cabinetry kitchen and Technik Closets with my inlaws. Everything was AWESOME! The kitchen looks fabulous and the closet looks like something out of Better Homes and Gardens. My carpenter was really impressed with the materials but more importantly, I have happy mother in law (Thats a first).

Man that is so ODD that particle board would fail from a 60 lb weight… even the weight was dropped or bouncing on it. Particle board is now the PREFERRED substrate in composition floor joists in new construction — that’s supporting 100’s of lbs per square foot. Also, most “wood” tables are now veneer applied to particle board b/c it increases durability over wood which can shrink, warp and crack with intense use. Also, it is important to note that now Costco has more than one brand/dealer for kitchen cabinets. It is important to specify which brand you are concerned about rather then lump it all together. And, just FYI, the Tuscan Hills Cabinets Costco program automatically includes a plywood box, so obviously there is no particle board in the box in that brand. Also, honestly, I am replacing “builder grade” particle board cabinets but it’s not the box that failed — the thermofoil has peeled off. The cabinet boxes are 20 years old and still can support a 6′ 170lb man standing on them to reach a canister light.

Well we bought another Technik Closet for the mother-in-law and All Wood kitchen cabinets for her house. They all arrived in great shape and she is thrilled. The kitchen cabinets look very nice and my carpenter was impressed with the construction. I will let everyone know how it looks after we install but so far so good.

    • 12 Jenn // 2013.06.09 at 12:57 pm

I purchased a closet system from Costco and I do have to say I was disappointed. The bottom of the closet system had a small shelf close to the floor, well my son who is 7 stood on this shelf and it broke, he only weights 60 lbs. I had to hire a handy man to come in and repair the shelf and replace it with a solid piece of wood and not with particle board like the old one. I think this is the same company that sells their kitchen, I would be hesitant to buy a kitchen from them.

      • 13 Kristin R // 2013.07.23 at 11:45 am

Do you let our son stand on furniture? That is silly to complain about this when he shouldn’t have been standing on it in the first place.

  6. 14 costcoman // 2013.04.25 at 8:15 pm

I believe folks are confusing the Costco’s All Wood Cabinetry (http://www.allwoodfast.com or http://www.awcabinetry.com) with another company that has a similar name (http://www.AllWoodCabinets.com)

All Wood Cabinetry’s Direct website- http://www.allwoodfast.com/
All Wood Cabinetry’s website through Costco- http://www.awcabinetry.com/

The below seems to be a totally different company…

    http://www.AllWoodCabinets.com

    Thanks and goodluck

    • 15 kimberly // 2013.05.20 at 8:04 am

I want to make sure there is NO misunderstanding. All Wood Cabinetry through Costco is the same company that is former name of Cabinet Liquidators and now called CL Kitchens http://www.clkitchen.com and the same company that is called All Wood Cabinetry and their website is http://www.awcabinetry.com/. So, same cabinets at Costco, CL Kitchens and All Wood Cabinetry. All manufactured in Florida at All Wood Cabinetry
210 Century Blvd, Bartow, Florida 33830 1-866-367-2516. They are just branded under different company names but are the exact same product.
Great quality cabinets and I would purchase them through the link through Costco as you will get them cheaper than if you go directly to CL Kitchens or if you call All Wood tell them you are a Costco member and they will give you the discount but they will make you put your order through the Costco website. Make sure you check your receipt after you place your order as there was a glitch when I made the order for my closets (also same company and also through the other companies I have mentioned (Costco, CL Kitchen and All Wood Cabinets called Techniks). I didn’t realize this as I had done the ordering on line with the designer and after the merchandise was delivered (one year ago) I’m now just getting settlement from Costco and NOT All Wood Cabinetry. There was a BIG problem. So, buy through Costco. Otherwise, great cabinets and DO NOT BUY their closets, they are ridiculously heavy, cumbersome and will cost you a fortune to install!

Just want everyone to know that the “kimberly” that made this comment isn’t the “Kimberly” that runs this blog.

        • 17 SSS // 2013.05.24 at 9:51 am

Hi Kimberly! Thanks for the great blog! Is there or is it possible to start a thread for “Tuscan Hills Cabinets” since that is a newer Costco line with different specs and from a different manufacturer? Thanks so much!

          • 18 Kimberly // 2013.05.26 at 8:28 pm

@SSS – I thought I already had one, so I’ll have to check. If not I can certainly start a post about it to get feedback on that line of cabinets too.

      • 19 Rainman // 2013.05.24 at 6:33 am

I bought the All Wood closet system. I did this after my installer who was formerly withl California Closets looked over the Tekniks specifications. He said they were as good if not better. The weight is because they are made out of 3/4″ board just like the big boys have. My wife and I love the closet, the look and the quality. We are now going to do my mother in law’s closet so that she stays at her home more often than ours.

Just purchased kitchen cabinets from All Wood Cabinetry through Costco. I have not recieved cabinets yet so this recomendation is based soley on the assistance I receive through the design team,in particular Jessica. She was professional, conscientious, and patient. Basically she was a delight to deal with. She knew time constraints were an issue for us and we needed help and product ASAP, so she did our design immediately, made changes immediately, and helped with expediting the order.
    Couldn’t ask for more!
If the cabinets are as good as the design team….the whole experience will be a 10 out of 10!!!!!
Thank you Jessica for all your help!!!!

I will like to request if att can please email me the other Florida on line site he mentioned for kitchen cabinets, with better pricing than All Wood Cabinetry.
    Thanks in advance.

I found allwoodcabinets.com comparable to the Costco ones but cheaper. I love mine!

Costos does offer quite high quality kitchen cabinets and bathroom accessories. Ive been pleased with the delivery an fitting.

When I was doing my kitchen I looked at Cabinet Liquidator’s and did not like the cabinets. I don’t know if they are the same as http://www.AllWoodCabinets.com. I know there was a big price difference. All Wood Cabinets .com were cheaper and the finishes were better. My cabinets came out of a warehouse in NJ which shipped quickly, less than 7 days. I did have a problem with one cabinet it was damaged during shipping. I had the choice of buying them assembled or RTA (ready to assemble). I spoke to my carpenter about assembling them and he said it would be no problem. He charged me $12 a cabinet. This saved me a lot in shipping charges since they came packed on a pallet. It took the carpenter about 5 minutes to assemble each cabinet and he said they were stronger than other cabinets he installed. The cabinets look better than the cabinets at HD or Lowes. I was very happy with my kitchen when it was completed. I would go with All Wood Cabinets again I was very pleased.

    • 25 Kimberly // 2012.08.13 at 7:17 pm

It is the same cabinet and the company is out of Florida but cabinet liquidators has stores all over the country
      The quality is the same
      I’m 1000% positive

  12. 26 Kimberly // 2012.08.10 at 10:43 am

    Maria:
All Wood Cabinets is the manufacture located in Florida and also makes kitchen cabinets and closets (Technik on Costco Website) under other cabinetry names as they white label them. That means i.e. a company like Cabinet Liquidators which is also their company sells the exact same product, however the prices on the Costco website are 15% less than they are if you buy them at Cabinet Liquidators.
The quality of the kitchen cabinets are excellent. They are all wood and about a month ago they started to custom size cabinets if you need them. I ordered through Cabinet Liquidators because I didn’t know about the discount at Costco until after I ordered. The cabinets arrived on time, CURB delivery which means you need to have someone there when the cabinets arrive to take them from the curb into your home. The quality was very good and I would recommend them. There was a slight problem with one of the drawers which they quickly replaced at no charge. For the price, the quality and quick delivery I would recommend them to you. If you buy go through All Wood Cabinets directly and ask for Juliana 866-763-9455 ext 221. She is a fantastic designer and you will get great prices.
The closets, however, are a completely different story. DO NOT BUY THESE. They are nothing more than heavy particle board, and I do mean HEAVY. They come assembled which sounds like your saving time but it will cost you more money in labor as they are so heavy you need 2 people to lift them. Do not attempt to get them up stairs for bedrooms as you will spend more money at the chiropractor getting your back adjusted and your contractor just might quit on you. They come with NOTHING labeled so if you are doing more than one closet you will spend 2-3 days just sorting out which piece goes where. Of course, they do not come with instructions and are not worth the cost in labor to purchase. Buy your closets from Easy Closets. They are quick, offer great design for free, free shipping and easy to put up.
Hope this helps you. Good luck with your decision.

I was in the process of ordering cabinets for my kitchen renovation project. At first I was not sure if I was going to make such a huge online purchase. But with Jessica (if I may write her name) we developed a trusting relationship that helped us make such a huge online purchase. I must say Jessica’s patience was amazing when designing my kitchen. I made so many changes over and over again and she never showed dislike or unwillingness. I was frustrated during this process because it was lengthy but she was always calm and helpful. I have to give her stars I would give her five stars and a gold medal for her professionalism. I have not received the cabinets yet but the “extras” that you get with the cabinet purchase from “ALL WOOD CABINETS” from Cotsco like pull out trays, soft closures and full extensions are considered free bees because they are all included in the price. I can’t wait for my cabinets to come. Thank you Jessica.

  14. 28 Greg // 2012.07.25 at 8:38 am

I looked at the Tuscan Hill Cabinets and found out they are made by Starmark Cabinetry. You probably could get a better deal dealing directly with a Starmark kitchen dealer. They make good cabinets but are expensive.

  15. 29 Maria // 2012.07.12 at 1:48 pm

We have had ours since early 2010 and there is no difference from when we had them installed… they are holding up great. Soft close features still work (and I have young children who are not especially easy on such things), the finish on the cabinets still looks new – it cleans well and still looks new, and the shelving and drawer bottoms are not sagging at all – nor are they showing any hint of disrepair. I am the original poster here so we definitely had some worries about buying this type of product online. I am happy to report that in our experience, the product is holding up well.

I had mind for over a year and they holding up ok. Regardless whether you go thru costco or other “online” vendors (mine is in FL) to get the allwood cab, they all provide design help. They are all probably the same folks providing design help for costco. For FL vendor I used, the soft close doors and drawers and full extension are optional if you want them. costco bundls them for free, but it increase the price, so it’s not exactly free.

  17. 32 Katie // 2012.07.10 at 4:41 pm

Has anyone else on this forum had their All Wood cabinets installed for awhile? Maybe 3-6 months? Can you let us know if they’re working out? I believe folks are correct that you can purchase online from another company selling the “same” product but there are significant difference from what I understand. You don’t get the same design help do you? And you don’t get the soft close doors and drawers and full extension.

  18. 33 htt // 2012.06.29 at 1:45 am

I purchased about 20 AWC cabinets thru costco in Oct 2010 and they looked quite good for $7K. After about 3 months the drawers on a 3-drawer base cabinet became a bit crooked, but not a big deal – easily fix by adjusting the slider. Overall I give these cab a 7 out of 10 – not bad for the price. Keep in mind these are Chinese made but assembled in USA. There is another online site base in Florida that sells the same cabinet, but just different name and this site is not affiliate with costco. They sell a the same cabinet a bit cheaper that AWC since they don’t have to pay a cut to costco, so end customers ill save a bit. I didn’t find out about this site until I place the order thru costco. However, going thru costco, you get that extra “peace of mind” about the warantee and if you have problem, you can walk into a costo store and complain. Since I don’t want to market this “other online site”, I will not post their name at this time. However, if there is interested, post your email address and I will email the website to you.

I’d love to hear if anyone has ordered from Tuscan Hills Cabinetry through Costco. I can’t find any reviews on them. They have been friendly and helpful, if a bit slow to respond to my inquiries.

    • 43 Bonnie // 2012.07.25 at 7:42 am

Judy, I’m going to place my order with Tuscan Hills Cabinetry this week. I’ve done my research and gotten 5 different quotes. All Wood was the closest in price but were still about $1K more. We got quotes from Home Depot, Lowes, and 2 other local custom cabinet installers that were referrals as “the best quality and price”. All came in thousands higher. We even went with the Ultimo series (lifetime warrenty) and the Costco cabinets include the full extension drawers, soft close mechanism and pull out trays for lower cabinets. These were extras on the other estimates. We did have to find our own installer but even adding his quote, we saved about $3K. These cabinets are custom, all wood box construction. We’ve been told that the finishes hold up better when the cabinets are manufactured back east (they don’t have the EPA regulations to adhear to like California mfr’s do.)

I’ll let you know when they come in. One down side is that they take about 3 weeks longer to get than the lower end model they sell. So est delivery will be 6-8 weeks.

      • 44 V icky // 2012.11.14 at 5:54 pm

Have you gotten your Tuscan Hills cabinets yet? What do you think of them? I am getting ready to have them quote cabinets for me. Would love you input.

We just received our cabinets and they’re very nice. They were packaged well and they made it here (Alaska) in very good condition. One cabinet was the wrong size and I’m waiting to see what they’ll do about it.

      • 46 SSS // 2013.05.24 at 9:49 am

Bonnie, so how are you enjoying Tuscan Hills Cabinets now? What wood species/door/stain-glaze did you go with? How as your overall experience? Thanks for your feedback!

I’ve just received my new bathroom vanity cabinets from Costco AWF. Absolutely beautiful!!! I couldn’t be happier with every single step of the design, ordering, and delivery process. I worked with Jessica and Brooke as the designers. They were so helpful and supportinve. AWF has worked out every detail from installation and care instructions on the website. I even received a Thank You note for the order from Justin. The cabinets arrived so quickly. I’m not quite ready to install them just yet but I’ve looked at the quality of finish, woodworking and hardware. I am so pleased. The cabinets were packaged so well and they arrived on a palette completely secured and wrapped. Even the delivery man was amazingly helpful.
I wouldn’t go elsewhere for cabinets. It’s been a great experience.

  21. 48 Katie // 2012.06.20 at 4:10 pm

I’ve been working with a designer at AWF and the experience with them has been delightful. I don’t know if I’ll purchase from them but I do think their commitment to customer service seems up to par with Costco. I also tried to work with Tuscan Hills but so far can’t say the same for them. Has anyone purchased Tuscan Hills cabinets? I can’t find any complaints or compliments on the web about them!

  22. 49 Greg // 2012.05.26 at 1:14 pm

I was looking around for good cabinets and my neighbor recently bought some cabinets from Costco and he had some problems with the finishes and after 3 tries they finally sent acceptable cabinet. I was looking on the web and typed in http://www.AllWoodCabinets.com and found this place. I ended up ordering cabinets from them because of the price they were a lot cheaper. I had no problems with the cabinets and thought they were of exceptional quality. Hope this helps.

I had the pleasure of working with Juliana at All Wood Cabinets. Her attention to detail and design ideas to get the most out of a small closets I have was incredible. The quick turn around and prices were over the too.
Thanks Juliana and All Wood Cabinets

CJ & Jennifer – if you guys want to sell your own brands of cabinets or services, you’ll need to find another outlet. I run a blog about Costco and not so that other vendors can post their URLs and try to use my blog to drum up business for themselves. Thanks.

  25. 52 Sarah T. // 2012.04.30 at 7:03 pm

We purchased cabinets for our kitchen from All Wood Cabinetry through Costco. We ordered Fulton Mocha Glaze and they look very nice. Jessica was our designer and was very helpful and patient. I was concerned what kind of condition they would be in coming across the country to southern California. They arrived maybe 3 weeks after placing the order in good condition. There were just a couple of minor problems caused from shipping. I called them and they immediately sent out replacements. We installed them ourselves but I would recommend that you hire an installer unless you are extremely handy. I would buy these again. I think for the money they are a good deal as we didn’t want to pay for custom cabinets.
