2010 Costco International Photo Contest

July 27th, 2010 · 2 Comments

It’s that time of year again, when Costco sponsors their International Photo Contest with a theme of “Give Us Your Best Shot.” The contest is co-sponsored by Panasonic Lumix cameras, Your Photo on Canvas, and Old Town.  They’ve changed it up a bit from last year with different prizes and some changes (for the better) in the rules. This is technically two contests really, because there is a contest for members and a separate contest for employees and their families.  The contest is open to Costco members or employees from around the globe (thus the ‘International’ part), just as long as you are 18 or older.  You can even be a professional photographer.

To enter, you can submit your photo online or via snail mail.  All photos must be 4″x6″, and digital photos must be in JPEG format.  But sadly, you can enter just one photo.  So, you’ll have to sift through all of your excellent shots to find the perfect, winning image.  And did you know you can even digitally enhance your photo?  But they’re just looking for the best image, not who has the most impressive Photoshop skills.  All entries must be received by September 30, 2010.  Once the winning photos are picked, the winners will be notified by mail.  All winning photographs from the member contest will then be published in the February or March 2011 issue of The Costco Connection.  The winners from the employee contest will be printed in the January/February 2010 issue of Costco Today.

The best change in the rules is about who retains copyright over submitted or winning photographs.  It’s you!  Last year Costco stated that they would retain all ownership of your photo once submitted. And there were at least a couple of comments here about what a rip off it was that Costco would do this.   I guess they decided that that wasn’t the Costco way and changed the rules to be more entrant friendly.  I’ll be honest, it is what has kept me from entering a photo in the past.  I know it is standard photo contest rules (as I said last year), but I don’t want to give up ownership of my photos just to enter a contest.  Silly, I know, since it’s not like I’m Ansel Adams or anything.

The rules aren’t all that has changed this year: they also have different prizes.  There will be one International Grand Prize Winner, and then 3 winners from each nation.

  • International Grand Prize
    • $2,500 Costco Cash Card
    • 40″ x 60″ Your Photo on Canvas Print
  • National Prizes
    • First Prize: $1,500 Costco Cash card & 30″ x 40″ Your Photo on Canvas Print
    • Second Prize: $1,000 Costco Cash card & 24″ x 32″ Your Photo on Canvas Print
    • Third Prize: $500 Costco Cash card & 20″ x 26″ Your Photo on Canvas Print
  • All winners will also receive:
    • A two-pack leather photo album. Value of prize is $20.00.
  • Honorable Mention Prizes
      • 16″ x 20″ Your Photo on Canvas Print
      • These are awarded at judges discretion.

As I mentioned, the deadline for entry is September 30, 2010.  So, that still gives you a couple of months to figure out which of your spectacular photos you want to enter.  If you’d like to check out what kind of shots won last year, you can view them online in the February 2010 issue of The Costco Connection.
