San Marcos Costco About to Undergo 6 Month Closure

January 7th, 2011 · No Comments

If you shop at the Costco location in San Marcos, located near San Diego, California on Center Drive, you’re about to have a sad six months!  After this Sunday, Costco will be closing the store for about six months to carry out some new construction to improve the store.  The store was originally opened in 1984 as a Price Club, and even though it seems like 134,000 square foot should be pretty good sized, Costco will be adding an additional 14,000 square foot.  The new building will be 148,000 square foot and include the addition of a gas station.

Costco purchased some new land from the city, as well as the nearby Harley-Davidson dealership, to have room for the expansion.  Since the old store is being closed and demolished, Costco will save about 1,000 truckloads of debris from going into a landfill by crushing up the existing concrete walls and floors on site and using them for the new construction.

Those that had a Costco pharmacy prescription at this location, were notified well in advance and given the option of transferring their scripts to the Vista or Carmel Mountain Ranch locations.  There were also about 300 employees that were reassigned to other stores while the construction is carried out; no one was laid off.

It seems that Portland (Oregon) is thinking they might be a good place for a Costco.  Mayor Sam Adams is having discussions with a local developer to bring a Costco to the Rose Quarter on the former site of the Portland Public Schools headquarters.  The spot is an eight acre parcel that has been proposed as a site for a home for a baseball stadium, Columbia Sportswear’s headquarters or condo towers.  And now you can add big box retailers to that list.

The deal faces some tough circumstances though.  The biggest one being, a new and affordable site for the school headquarters.  And there is also likely to be a fair amount of resistance from those living in the area since it is counter to what many see as Portland’s charm –  an independent, green spirit – and would object to the traffic and vast parking lots that come with big boxes.

Chicago might soon be home to its second Costco location thanks in part to a proposed tax break for the retailer.  On Wednesday, the Committee on Economic, Capital and Technology Development unanimously passed a property tax break request that would give Costco a $1-million break over 12 years for a proposed store at 14th Street and Ashland Avenue.  The proposed location is a 16 acre plot near the University of Illinois at Chicago’s medical campus.    The ordinance is scheduled to be voted on by the full City Council at their upcoming meeting on January 13.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for those of you that live in Chicago.  I can’t believe they only have one Costco location for a city that size.
