In the News: Lottery Winners, New Stores, and Asthma Screening

Lucky Lottery Winners:

I know I mentioned the good fortune of the group of Costco employees that won the lottery already, but it’s such a great story I thought I’d link to a more recent story about it too.  So, as you probably heard a group of 20 Costco employees from the warehouse on Long Island won the recent big Powerball lottery drawing of $201.9 million.  Everyone gave $5.00 towards the purchase of the lottery tickets and really, I think that’s a pretty good return on that investment.  The group decided to take the payout in a single lump sun payment, so the total was actually $106 million, $70 million after taxes.  That amount leaves each of them with about $3.5 million.

New Stores:

Well, technically it isn’t a truly new location, but all the same, Costco is getting ready to open or re-open it’s expanded warehouse in San Marcos in California.  The updated store reopens on July 8 with an expanded warehouse, updated photo and optical equipment, and a new gas station.  They have also expanded the space allotted to several of the sections inside the store, in addition the food court has moved inside.   Since the store will be so much bigger now they are planning to add 30 to 40 new employees to the staff too.

Construction has finally started on the new Costco location in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.  The store is scheduled to open sometime this fall.  The new location will be part of the Meadow Creek Mall, northwest of Highway 164 and West Capitol Drive.  The 148,000 square foot store will be the second warehouse to open in the Milwaukee area.

I also posted news links on my Locations page about a couple of new locations that are in the very early stages.  One of these is the much wanted and anticipated store in the Knoxville, Tennessee area that will be located in Farragut.  The new warehouse is being proposed for Lovell Road and Kingston Pike in Farragut.  Costco is in the process of working with the planners to get approval for the new store.  I’ve read that in the past the planners have been a bit difficult for businesses but hopefully that won’t be the case with the new Costco and everything will run smoothly.  If all goes according to plans, the new warehouse should open in late 2011 or early 2012.

The other new location that is still in the very early stages of discussion.  Costco hasn’t even confirmed it yet, I believe.  But the rumor is that Costco will be opening a second location in Iowa, in Coralville on Heartland Drive.  There are some existing buildings on the site that will be renovated to make the 160,000 square foot store.  The new location will also have a covered gas area and a 600 spot parking garage.  The current plan makes it sound like the new store could be open as early as November 2011 but more likely early 2012.

Free Asthma Screening at Idaho Costco and around the Nation:

There are an increasing number of adults and children that are being diagnosed with asthma and several thousand people in the US die from asthma each year, either because they were unaware of the condition or because they didn’t have it under control.  So, if you live in the Twin Falls, Idaho area and you’ve been wondering how your lungs are doing, this is the perfect time to find out. This Saturday, June 25, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology is sponsoring a free asthma screening at the Costco location in Twin Falls.  The screening can also be useful to people already diagnosed with asthma because it will give them the chance to make sure their condition is under control.  The screenings will also alert people to other breathing conditions they may  be suffering from other, such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).  The free screening is part of the 15th annual Nationwide Asthma Screening Program.  The screening program has screened more than 124,000 people, about half of which were referred to physicians for thorough diagnostic testing and care.  So, if you’re not in the Twin Falls area, you should check to see where you can get your free screening in your area.

Herman Miller Aeron Chairs at Fremont, CA Costco:

I wanted to make sure that I mentioned this helpful bit of information sent to me by Kristi, a fellow Costco fan.  They are selling Aeron chairs, with all the bells and whistles, at the Fremont Costco location for $699.  She asked as the store and they said they would be selling the chairs through June 26, Sunday.  So, if you’ve been looking for the ultimate in chair comfort, and live around here, you should give this some consideration.

Half of these lottery winners live in my town, and as a matter of fact, the winning ticket was purchased in my town as well. Not that it makes any difference, given the odds, but it does give one pause for thought, as they say. I am not encouraged by post-winning plans such as “going to Vegas”. A fool and his money are soon parted, but hopefully some of these folks will enjoy their winnings for a long time.
