This Week at Costco – December 30, 2012

January 5th, 2013 · 4 Comments

I cannot believe it is already 2013, this year just seemed to zip right by.  And now I’m feeling the pressure of our impending move to Sydney (Australia, not Nova Scotia sorry).  And to add to all of that, it has been weeks and weeks and weeks since our last trip to Costco.  Okay, probably just five or six weeks, but it feels much longer since I know that I can’t go until we are in our temporary housing in Australia in two weeks.

It turns out it really is hard for me to not make a trip to Costco in this long.  I have known since our last trip to Costco actually, that it would have to be our last one since the trip to Sydney was pretty assured at that point.  But that hasn’t made it any easier.  I tried to stock up on stuff but not buy too much.  It is a fine line to walk, and much harder than I would have thought.  I’ve done pretty well with our food stuff actually.  I’ve got just enough in my freezer, fridge and pantry to last us for the next week I think.  So I feel pretty pleased about that.  We won’t have to throw out any food, which is great.  Well, we’ll have to chuck a few mostly used condiments, but really not much else.  It’s the optimal situation really.  Luckily there are plenty of places to eat around our flat if we should run out of stuff early.

Persil Non-Bio Laundry Capsules

The unfortunate thing is that I do have some cleaning supplies left over, like a practically new bottle of Dettol spray.  But I’ll just have to do some extra good cleaning and that will probably take care of that.  I was a bit worried on our last trip to Costco when I picked up the 70 wash pack of Persil Non-Bio laundry capsules (2, 35 capsule packs for £12.99, item #: 0126110) that I wouldn’t be able to use it all before we left.  Now of course, I’m more worried about being short by just a few washes.  Isn’t that the way it always is?  And I know I am going to need to get some extra fabric conditioner.  There’s a lot of laundry to do right before you move.  Since we’ll be storing everything for several months before it is either shipped on to us in Sydney or to a new location here in London, it’ll still be spending a long time in boxes.  Of course that means I definitely don’t want dirty laundry hanging around in those boxes for months and months.  Yech!

Original Space Bags

There is one thing that I picked up on our last Costco shopping trip specifically for our move: Original Space Bags.  The pack at Costco contains 14 different sized space bags for £17.49 (Item #: 0560762); this is also something they regularly have in the Costco US stores which is where I picked up my other set before we moved to London.  If you haven’t used these before, they are great for compressing down all of your soft things, like clothes and linens, for storage.  I had an existing set that I used to store lots of our clothing under our beds.  In just four bags I was able to store all of our out of season clothing even when that meant all of our big, thick jumpers/sweaters.  I’m really interested to try out this new set though because in addition to the regular flat vacuum seal bags (4 large and 2 medium) there are five cube bags (2 jumbo and 3 extra large).  These big cubes are easily big enough for me to store all of the bedding for my two beds (each in their own bag).  And that includes four pillows, sheets, and the comforters for each bed.  I’ve got down pillows and comforters, so I might even be able to get a little more in the bags since those will squash down to just about nothing.  These bags are great for anyone that is moving like we are, but also for long periods of storage in your attic, basement, or even just a closet or wardrobe.  The bags protect against bugs, moths, dirt, mildew, and water since they are completely airtight.  I should have enough Space Bags now to vacuum pack all of our clothing and linens that will be stored.  We also use these a lot when we travel, so it was great to see that there are three of the travel sized bags (1 suitcase and 2 carry on bags) in this package.    Now I just have to figure out what I’m going to wear for the next five months! 🙂

We have gotten a lot accomplished in the last month with regards to our move, so I feel pretty prepared.  In just 10 days all of our stuff will be all packed up and we’ll be on our way to Sydney.  It doesn’t seem like much time at all.  And certainly there’s no time in our schedule for even a quick farewell visit to Costco here in the UK.  How will I make it through another 2 weeks (at least) until my next Costco trip?  But of course, when I next visit Costco there will be all kinds of new things to see and try!  I’m looking forward to that.

My plan is to still post my regular amount over the next couple of weeks, however, that might be kind of hard to pull off since I have nothing left to review.  Luckily though, there’s always lots of Costco news to write about.

One last thing, I still haven’t seen anything about the next Costco UK coupon book.  But I’ll definitely post it as soon as I get it!

I went to the UK Birmingham branch on Saturday and was asked if I’d like the coupons e-mailed to me in the future. I gave them an email address and ticked a little box to say I’d like to receive special offers.
