February 2013 Locations Update

February 28th, 2013 · 11 Comments

Lots of good news for new Costco locations this month with several new locations getting through early planning and rezoning stages.  Unfortunately, I don’t have news about locations in Oklahoma, though I have heard they own property in Tulsa, there’s nothing to confirm that or indicate they have plans of actually building.  I’ve also made sure to include holiday closure information for the various Costco locations as a result of the Easter holiday at the end of the month.

Bellingham, Washington

As I think I mentioned in the January location update, Costco and Bellingham are in discussions about moving their store to a new location on West Bakerview Road, across from Fred Meyer.  For this project to go ahead though, the City Council has had to revisit restrictions that it has put on retail stores to be less than 90,000 square foot.  The City Council unanimously approved an exemption for the West Bakerview site at a February 11 meeting.  At this point, Costco has not said that they will definitely be moving to the proposed spot on West Bakerview, but have said that their current store is too small.  Meanwhile, the city has been preparing the land “for any big-box retailer.”  But I think all of the people who shop at the tiny Costco on Meridian Street that it will hopefully end up being Costco.

Lynnwood, Washington

Necessary zoning changes have given to a big mixed use project in Lynnwood that is to include a Costco as an anchor store.  The new project, called Lynnwood Place, will be on the old site of the Lynnwood high school and be made up of 990,000 square feet of shops and homes.  Aside from a new Costco location the site will have several mid-rise apartment buildings with retail stores, restaurants and offices located on the street level.  The City Council approved a zoning change to commercial/residential zoning to make better use of the 40 acre site.  Apparently, this project has been in development for over 6 years!  So, it is great to see it moving ahead.  This is just one of the first steps because the project still needs to get approval on things like architecture, landscaping, entrances, and  environmental impact statement.   This new project also includes construction of a four-lane bypass road that would wrap around Lynnwood Place and connect Alderwood Mall Parkway with 184th Street SW on the north and west sides of the property.  Not even a tentative date or thought as to when the stores, and most importantly Costco, will be open yet.  But the story does site the developer as saying that the engineering plans will take 4 to 6 months to get to the City Council.  I’d have thought that they would have had those available after such a long time.

San Juan Capistrano, California

If you shop at the San Juan Capistrano Costco location, you might be happy to hear that the last phase of the their additions has just been approved.  The new, and final, addition will be a 3,200 square foot automated car wash and attendant building.  This follows the other completed additions that include a covered entry, patio dining area, and gas station.

Ukiah, California

The Ukiah City Council has voted unanimously to borrow $4 million dollars for the necessary traffic improvements that are required to bring a proposed Costco store to Airport Park Boulevard.  This is necessary to keep retail and commercial development focused around the Redwood Business Park and avoid unnecessary, and unattractive, urban sprawl.  The road improvements were part of the negotiations with Costco, however, if it hadn’t been Costco that needed the improvements, it would have been some other retailer or developer, according to City Council members.  This is a hard issue for members of the county, I’m sure, but I think it is great that the city is willing to spend the money to improve their city and keep retailers interested in developing there, all at the same time.

Wheaton, Maryland

They’ve moved forward the opening date for the new Wheaton Costco location to April 10, 2013.

Alexandria, Virginia

The construction on the new Alexandria Costco location is proceeding as planned.  They have apparently done some of the ground work and are letting the soil settle at this point, but the store is still on track for their May 2013 opening.  I don’t have the exact date yet, but will post it when I do.  The new location will be at 7940 Richmond Highway, in Alexandria, across from Sherwood Hall Lane and a Walmart store.

Hiroshima, Japan

The new Costco location in Hiroshima will be opening on March 23, 2013 but one thing has Costco shoppers already a bit unhappy with the new location: parking.  More specifically, they will be required to pay for parking.  Costco says that they are doing this to avoid overcrowding and possible parking from people that aren’t shopping there but are attending events at the Mazda Stadium.  Customers will be expected to pay a 3,000 yen (US $32) fee to park in the Costco parking garage.  Yikes!  However, Costco does have a plan to alleviate some of the parking fee pain.  Customers who make a purchase of 5,000 yen (US $53.50) or more receive one hour of free parking, and customers will get two hours of free parking with a purchase of 10,000 yen (US $107) or more.  Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever left Costco without spending at least US $100, so this seems reasonable to me and is better than making people pay without a discount for actual shoppers.  Also, they do have a special area for those customers expect to only spend an hour shopping in Costco where customers will need to pay 100 yen (US $1.07) for 10-20 minutes.  But how often do you get out of Costco in that short a time?  And naturally, if you stay over 60 minutes, you’ll need to pay the full 3,000 yen (US $32) parking fee.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out once the store has officially opened.

Any word on the upcoming location for the SECOND Costco, warehouse in Saskatoon, SK?
Heard there are at least three potential sites around the city, my family is hoping to get the new location on the East side, or South East end, either would be great for us!!!! Perhaps with the new relaxed, and updated liquor laws in Saskatchewan concerning vendors and distribution Costco will enclose a liquor store? The “Kirkland Signature” labeled wines are terrific, right now we have to purchase them in the States…..

Paying that much for parking?? That’s craziness. I guess they won’t get to just bum around and see what’s new, go for some samples or a hotdog and fries and gravy, and just have a fun Costco date like my man and I do.
I have a large Costco haul planned for Saturday….I am running low on so many things. Can’t wait!

Hey Thomas, I am also looking to transfer to new Costco to be near family in Lago Vista. Trying to get some answers from Costco underground. My sister lives there and the surrounding businesses are up and running, the roads all around are built. I have her checking on the bridge over pond construction. When they pour concrete or I get more news I will post.

Word in Columbus, Ohio is that a second Costco will be opening at Easton Gateway later this year. I can’t find too much information on it, but our paper had an article about it and one of the Costco checkout people told me as well. Love your site!
