May 2013 Locations Update

May 30th, 2013 · 7 Comments

There seems to be a whole lot of location news this month.  I’ve even got a couple of construction photos this month.  I’ve heard a great big fat rumour recently that there is going to be a new Costco built in Kansas City somewhere near Metro North or The Legends shopping centers, but I’m not exactly sure where.  This is just total rumour at this point, I don’t even have a shred of news to tie this too.  So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for everyone but without some documented confirmation from somewhere, I’m hopeful but not getting ready to plan a shopping trip.

Hanford, California

Hanford must be the luckiest city in the world right now.  Not only are they getting a Costco but an In-N-Out too!  The new Costco location will be on the southwest corner of Lacey Boulevard and Highway 43, where there is currently just a vacant lot.  The new Costco warehouse will be an anchor for a new 58 acre development.  The new store will be around 150,000 square foot and have an auto center, as well as a gas station.  There will be an  Environmental Impact Report for this project that is expected to be done by November.  Assuming all goes smoothly and nothing untoward shows up in the EIR, Costco could be breaking ground on the new location by early next year.  Then you’ll be able to do a little quality Costco shopping and stop by In-N-Out afterward for a Double Double with cheese and a chocolate shake to revive you post shopping.

Mount Vernon Construction Underway

Mount Vernon, Virginia

The new Mount Vernon Costco location on Richmond Highway is getting closer and closer to actually looking like a warehouse now.  The article below doesn’t have much text or details but does have lots of good pictures of the progress of the building.  The store should be open in early August from what I’ve read, possibly August 8, but until Costco publishes a firm date that is just speculation.  This location has also started hiring for positions in the new store.

Cummings, Georgia

Well, it looks like there will indeed be a new Costco location in Cummings.  The new warehouse will be located at the corner of Bald Ridge Marina Road and Market Place Boulevard, near the Georgia Highway 400 exit 15.  The plans have been approved for the 152,000 square foot store and grading for the site where the new building will stand has already begun.  It looks like the new store should be open before Thanksgiving time, so you’ll be able to pop in and get your turkey and one of the delicious Costco bakery pumpkin pies.

Rochester, New York

It looks like Rochester will be joining Camillus in bringing Costco to upper New York residents.  Rochester’s new CityGate development that will be built at the southeast corner of East Henrietta and Westfall roads, on the former site of the Monroe County tuberculosis sanitarium and city offices,  but is now just abandoned buildings.  So this will surely be a welcome change to abandoned buildings that have been blighting the spot since the 90s.  The 45 acre CityGate development, developed by Costello and Son, will encompass nearly 400,000 square feet of retail space, 112,000 square feet of office space, a 150-room hotel, as well as 300 two and three bedroom residential units.  So, Costco is just a small part of this very large development, but they’re the important key since they are the first retail tenant.  The new Costco store will be 150,000 square foot, but no one seems to indicate if there will be a gas station too or not.  Costco also will seek Monroe Industrial Development Agency county tax breaks and state incentives to help offset construction costs.  It seems that there isn’t much, if any, opposition to the project, so it is possible that the new Costco could be open by Spring 2014.

Fort Wayne, Indiana

In early May, Costco closed on a deal for the old Menards property on the northwest corner of Lima and Progress roads.  Preparatory works have been going on at the site for a number of weeks now and sometime soon building should be able to start in earnest.  The new warehouse will be 150,000 square foot, which seems to be the new standard since all of these new sites I’ve posted about today are that big.  The new locations will create about 100 full-time and 100 part-time positions.  It seems like this location could be open by Fall 2013.

Bellingham, Washington

It seems that Costco is strongly considering moving its current, overly crowded Bellingham store to a new location in the city.  Costco has submitted pre-approval plans to the city outlining a new 162,000 square foot store with a 6 island gas station (is that 24 pumps then?)  and an 800 car parking lot along West Bakerview Road and near I-5.  Since traffic congestion in that area is a key concern, Costco has proposed some road changes to help ease the potential traffic problems.  Roads would be developed on the north and east side of the property, and street improvements would be made on nearby Pacific Highway.  Apparently, the city also has current road projects underway that will alleviate some of the current traffic issues in the area, including:  the freeway overpass will get a second westbound lane, the west Fred Meyer exit will get a second left-turn lane, and a right-turn lane will be added to Airport Drive at Maplewood Avenue to improve traffic flow to the northbound I-5 on-ramp.  The next step for Costco will be to organize a neighborhood meeting for public feedback, then file for building permit applications.

Wichita, Kansas

It looks like a Costco in Wichita could be inching forward.  The news about Costco buying the 17.5 acre Beechcraft site  at the corner of Kellogg and Webb has been reported for about a year now, I think.  However, it does seem that the rumours are  perhaps a bit more substantial at this point.   It appears that Costco does have a contract on the property but it was dragging along due to the Hawker bankruptcy filing.  It is possible that Costco could close on the property by the end of the year and have their new warehouse open by mid-2014.  The city is planning to put a stop light in at Corporate Hills Drive where there would be an entrance to the new Costco warehouse.  I’ll keep you posted.

St. Albert, AB, Canada

It looks like the new Costco location in St. Albert will be open this fall, in November from what I have heard.  The new location will have a 13,750 square metre/148,000 square foot warehouse, a liquor store, and a gas station and located east of Highway 2 and north of the King of Kings Lutheran Church at the north end of St. Albert Trail.  In addition to the new Costco, there will be a retail development going in to the south of the new Costco and to the east of the store will be a new residential development.

Good Progress on New Costco in Ringwood

Ringwood, VIC, Australia

It appears that the new Ringwood Costco location is coming along quite well according to my latest email from them (sign up to get email updates at  The concrete floor is down and the steel structure is almost up too.  Costco now has a temporary office set up at the Eastland Shopping Centre where you can get a membership brochure or enquire about a career at the new Costco in Ringwood.  If you are interested in working for Costco you can also see all of the available at positions for Ringwood, on the website where you can also apply online.

North Lakes, QLD, Australia

At the beginning of the month, the new Costco location at North Lakes near Brisbane was approved by Jeff Seeney, Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning.  The application for the new Costco warehouse was previously approved by the Moreton Bay Regional Council, but that decision was appealed in the Planning and Environment Court by objectors.  However, with this latest approval we can all rest easy because the decision can not be appeals to the Planning and Environment Court and a new Costco is on its way.  No word on when the new location is likely to open yet, but I’ll keep you updated.

Seville, Spain

Could it be that Costco is actually looking at opening its first European store, outside of the UK, in Spain?  It appears that this could very well happen. According to Spanish news reports Costco has recently created a subsidiary in Spain and has plans to open a warehouse in the commercial center Higuerón Sur in Seville.  I’m really amazed by this since Spain has such a dicey economic situation right now, but maybe that will allow Costco to start up operations for a lot less money and that is appealing.  We’ll see how this one pans out.

We really want Costco location in Central Illinois! Preferably in Champaign. Sams Club has three locations in our area: Champaign, Decatur, and Bloomington/Normal; but increasingly I hate going there, since there product selection and quality has deteriorated.

I live in Wichita. And I don’t think a Costco here is a good idea. I have been going to the ones in Kansas City and I don’t feel Wichita has the customer service that Costco people give. But if it does I might look at getting a job there.
