Costco US Photo Center Down to Investigate Possible Third Party Data Breach

July 23rd, 2015 · No Comments

The online Costco Photo Center website has been taken down as a precautionary step while an investigation determines if there was a data breach at PNI Digital Media.  PNI Digital Media is the third party that hosts/manages the Costco Photo Center website, as well as similar services for Tesco, CVS, Sam’s Club, Rite Aid, and Walmart.  As you can see, this affects a lot of different retailers not only in the US, but also Canada, and the UK.   Here’s what PNI’s parent company, Staples had to say:

We take the protection of information very seriously. PNI is investigating a potential credit card data issue, and outside security experts are assisting in the investigation, said Kirk Saville, vice president, global communications at Staples Inc , which bought Vancouver-based PNI last year.

As far as Costco is concerned their website remains down (as of the publishing of this post) today.   Costco says that they are not sure if any of their customer data has been involved in the breach, but would rather take the site down until they can be sure.  This breach could include data such as contact information, passwords, and credit card details.  If Costco determines that their user data was affected by this incident, they will reach out to the specific members involved.

While is down, you can still use Costco’s in-store photo center though.  Hopefully, Costco will figure this out soon and determine that none of their member data was involved in the breach.  But for now, the website says the following:

As a result of recent reports suggesting that there may have been a security compromise of the third party vendor who hosts we are temporarily suspending access to the site. This decision does not affect any other Costco website or our in-store operations, including in-store photo centers.

Prints, posters, canvas prints, photo books, stationery and greeting card orders can still be placed at a Photo Center kiosk available in most locations.

We take the security of our members’ data seriously, which is why we are taking this precautionary step. We will update this statement when we have more information.

This issue does not affect the online Costco Photo websites in other locations.  If you are in Canada, the UK, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, or Korea the online photo websites are up and running and not affected by this data breach.
