Costco US Switch to Visa Postponed Until Summer

February 9th, 2016 · 59 Comments

If you are a Costco US shopper, Costco announced last year that they would be switching from American Express to Visa for cards accepted in stores, as well as for their Citi co-branded card.  This change was due to take place on April 1, 2016, but has now been pushed back to sometime this summer.

Sadly, they aren’t even very exact now about when the change will take place, just saying it will happen in June or by mid-summer (which I guess is July).

The timing of the transition is “fluid,” Richard Galanti, Costco CFO, said. “It’s between Amex and Citi — negotiating and completing the agreements to do that transition.”  For customers, he said, “There won’t be any gap in the middle.”

I think the issue is in how Citi can deal with the transfer of Costco customer account data from American Express since they obviously have different card number formats and systems.  In any case, it is making things very difficult for Costco customers that have an American Express card since they are now not sure if they will get their rewards from continuing spending on the Costco American Express.  Plus, I have had emails from several readers with American Express cards that are about to expire and they are wondering how to proceed with getting a new American Express or not.

As you know, I’m a big fan of Costco, but this whole process has been handled very poorly, in my opinion.  Perhaps even worse than this waffling on when the new Visa deal will actually start, is that no one seems to want to give any information to customers about what benefits they can expect from the new co-branded Citi Visa card.  Will the cash back percentages be exactly like those of the existing American Express or better?  Will there be other benefits?  Is the new card actually going to be worse for Costco customers?  The only good news is that once they do start accepting Visa, any Visa card can be used not just the co-branded one, and since a lot of people already have Visa cards you won’t have to sign up for the new co-branded card unless it is as good or better than the existing co-branded American Express Costco card.

I think Kimberly is okay, I saw her posting a quite a few reviews on tripadvisor and it appears she’s been traveling. Good on her but I wish she would update us!

Are you sure it’s the same person? It’s unlikely and pretty crummy for someone to completely ditch a successful blog without any post saying goodbye or explaining anything…

Michelle – It is, her facebook profile photo is the same one she uses on trip advisor and there are reviews this year throughout europe. Plus the public info on the domain shows it was edited/renewed/something within the last 6 months. I don’t know the circumstances or anything but she seems okay, I miss this blog though!

I used to check this site regularly about Costco but there has not been anything posted for almost a year, that is too bad. An update would be nice to know if you are planning on continuing this blog. Hope everything is ok and there is not trouble with something you said on here…?

Attention Costco Members: are you aware that our new Costco Credit card was issued by Citibank who is helping to fund the Dakota pipeline? I recently sent the Costco HQ an email complaining about this issue and all they did was forward it to Citibank. More Costco members need to contact Costco HQ and voice your concerns and maybe threaten to cancel your membership or at least the credit card. Remember, Costco now takes any Visa card.

Looked at my Citi card rewards and they reset to zero, so I’m going to guess reward checks will come a month earlier than they did with the AMEX. Don’t quote me on that

I was wrong- check coming February. I remember the AMEX accumulation going through January and the Citi accumulation went through December instead.

Anyone receiving multiple Visa cards? I’ve received 3 so far, all with the same number. Costco just says to shred the extras. Also, when I tried using my new card for Costco gas it did not work. The attendant said it was a known issue and when I went inside the printed me a separate Executive card to use in case it happens again.

Personally, I’m wondering if I will be happy with the customer service of Citi since they can’t even handle the initial roll out. I miss AMEX. Never had a single problem with them.
